Lots of meds tried but nothing helps | ADHD Information
Have you considered changing the educational environment? I am not sure what is available in Australia. Anything like Waldorf? I'm pretty sure there are Montessori schools.
What is the main ADHD symptom? Focus?
Was the doctor handling the meds a child psychiatrist? If not, you might want to revisit the med issue.
In your shoes I would go to a major children's hospital for a comprehensive neuro-psychological evaluation to include recommendations for the classroom. You kind of need a solid diagnosis to help him(or diagnoses). It may be out of pocket (it was for me), but it helps you see where you are, and come up with a game plan.My son has tried a mountain of meds over the last 5 years.
Ritalin - No effect either way
Dex- Major anger and anxiety
sertraline- anxiety
fluoxetine- maybe a slight improvement but not enough to help
fluvoxemine - again slight improvement but not enough to help
strattera - No effect either way
Risperdal (currently trying but does not look hopeful.
We have also tried Omega 3 and magnesium and also tried modifying his
diet but with no changes. We have also tried 2 bouts of CBT
I am really beginning to believe that there is nothing that can be done to
help him.
He has been diagnosed with adhd and possible pdd-nos.
He is an intellegent child who can not seem to cope with school at all and
is becoming completely disengaged from his education. The school is
being very co-operative and is trying everything that they can think of
but he will not do very much work for them, even when one on one.
This is really starting to effect his education now that he is 10 and in
grade 4.
We have seen many different medical people including 2 X peadiatric
behavioural specialists, an autism specialist (who did not think he was on
the spectrum), 2 x psychologists, a naturopath and an alternative doctor.
Has anyone else out there been down our path that has found some help?
Has anyone got any other options?.
I am beginning to get desperate as I need him to begin to make the most
of his education .
Thanks for any replys.
Cheers, AndreaFind yourself a psychiatrist or a neuropysch who knows what they are doing. It may very well be that your child is not ADHD, but bipolar or aspergers or any of a dozen disorders that mimic ADHD.
Don't give up until you figure it out. I have a bipolar child and an ADHD child.... and when I finally found the right docs, therapy and meds for each, it was like our family was reborn.

I'm with Jessica N, I would suggest seeing a child psychiatrist. They are the experts when it comes to the medications and how to adjust them for the best results. Also they know the little tricks of how to adjust the doses, order of doses, the timing of the doses, or adding another medication to make them work (if possible at all). If you don't try all these things with a medication then it's possible that you've discounted it unnecessisarily.
