Tenex dosageFor those of you who's children take Tenex or guanfacine how much do they take and how old are they? Tenex works wonders for my son's side effects of Ritalin but I still think the dose needs to go up a little. He's still somewhat anxious and moody. Not horrible (not like it was before!) but I just think it could be better. My son is on 1mg (.5 in morning, then .25 in afternoon and .25 right before bed). I'm just wondering if anything over 1mg is a "high" dose or if it's still reasonable. Any input would be great! My son is a very small 10 year old and was taking 1mg in the am and 1mg in the pm, right after school. He's been on this since February and I honestly don't think there's been a change at all. His dr upped his dosage today to 2mg in the am and 2mg in the pm.. If I don't see anything with this increase, I will discontinue and look into something else. willsmama, Is he taking in addition with anything else?
Yes, he's taking Vyvanse and Dextroamphetimine. Boy, I am at a loss. I only know of our success when used along with concerta. I am also using it for impusiveness and anxiety. Is this what you were trying to control as well? Yes, I am. God love him, he's just so complex. He's loud and hyper, impulsive and moody with a ton of anxiety, and makes tons of noises (mouth noises, meows) all day long. We are going to see a new dr soon, who is suppose to be the top guy in Alabama. I don't think his diagnosis of just ADHD is correct. He burns right thru his meds and still things aren't good..
My son metabolizes fast also. He is 12 and at 108 mgs of concerta. But we have stayed at 1 mg of tenex. Are you going to see a psychopharm? Are you going to reevaluate?? Yes, I want to get him retested. He's taking 70 mg of Vyvanse but it only seems to last a few hours. The tenex doesn't seem to be doing anything. And now he's developed a tic, I guess. I could just cry.. I hate reading this stuff. This children are children and just can't help it. I agree start with another evaluation. How is school? His teachers are awesome but he is struggling with behavior. He's a sweet kid but is extremely disruptive and is really getting on the nerves of his classmates. If the diagnosis is accurate, there must be another med choice that would help him if the increased dosage does not. this breaks my heart. Our kids need a social life, but these "things" get in there way. AND they are so young and cant even try to control it. Is there anyone in his class who is compassionate and tolerant to him? I know at our school they had a class discussing this. It is amazing how classmates can stick together and protect another. It would be nice if this could happen for your son. Please keep us posted to how you are all making out. Well, the strange thing is. He drives his class crazy BUT they all still like him. Apparently they had a very bad sub yesterday who, along with other things, told Will to shut up. The class was VERY upset and told his other teacher how mean she had been to him. (don't worry, I think she'll no be invited back) He's been on so many different things and it just doesn't seem to be getting better. My heart breaks for him and now with this tic, it's just soo soo sad.. I am glad to read this. you are very lucky. HIs classmates really care about him. What a great bunch of kids. How awesome that they stuck up for him and told on the bully teacher. How dare a teacher tell a child to shut up! what is his tic? My son claimes he has phlem, all the time, but the doc thinks its a tic. He does this even when his meds have worn off. I know! This class started off very rough but they've come a long way in the 11 weeks they've been in school. I'm surprised that they stuck up for him. But from what I hear, shut up is not the worst thing she said..I am shocked that anyone would talk this way in school.. His teacher told me that the class stood up for him.. Will ALWAYS makes mouth noises but lately he's been jerking his head and popping the mouth bubble he's made, sounds kind of like spitting.. The head jerking is new and very scary to me. He seeems to know he's doing it though. His noises are what gets him in trouble the most at school. It had gotten so bad that I started going to school and sitting off to the side in his class. Not once did he make those noises, so we believed that he was choosing to do them. But the head jerking has me worried. My DH thinks he's choosing to do this but I don't know anymore. And Will does NOT talk about his feelings. My son doesn't either, but he has gotten better just plain talking. His psychopharm mentioned to us after x number of visits that he wondered if he had aspbergers, because he wouldn't converse. DS was only 7-8 yrs old at the time. My son is soooo shy. He does talk now, 12 yrs old, but it is maturity. DS has always told me things. He comes to me because of how I have ALWAYS stuck up for him and fought his battles. I have always asked him how school was, I still do this. He only talks to me, not DH. but he doesnt ask. i ask about everything, especially tests/quizzes grades. Maybe your son will when he is a little older. Is he 10? I am still so pleased at his class sticking up for him, that is so tremendously awesome. You are blessed!! My son is 12 and takes 1 mg. for the whole day. He is prescribed to take two if necessary, but we don't. He has been on this dosage since he was 7. Please let us know what you think!!yes, he's a very small, immature 10 year old. We are looking into Aspergers also. I think it fits Will but what do I know? I cannot find a psychopharm in Alabama. Any ideas? have you tried googling for one? Have you tried at your closest children's hospital? There has to be one there. Aspbergers and adhd is common, I find. I read about it and know a few children. I find that my son's adhd changes. It is tough as he gets older when the meds wear off. still goofy and immature BUT when he has his meds, there is absolutely no sign of it. It amazes his teachers!! What makes you think aspbergers - behavior? Yes, I've looked everywhere and cannot find anyone! I've been reading a lot about Aspergers and they really seem to fit Will. Just the way he reacts to things, or the way he doesn't seem to understand the difference between what's real and what isn't. Or how he takes everything literally. The other day, I asked him why he had his butt on his shoulders. He looked at me so puzzled and said, I'm sitting on it!!! He also cannot handle change, must know ahead of time what the plans are, and when something is a little off, he falls apart. We've NEVER had a med that we could say there was no sign of the ADHD.. There was a poster who asked about a few other meds, have you ever tried seroquel? I googled it and was reading about it and it mentions it is used for autistic, not sure how severe however. Have you ever asked the school what they think about him having aspbergers? I did once and they gave me a "for sure" answer. Oh, and my son can take things word for word as well. How is your son in social settings, does he want to join in or is he happy doing his own thing? I will google that. He's never taken that. He is not social. He seems to want to have friends, but he's always off by himself. His teachers don't seem to know.. Every dr we've been to have all said that he is so hard to read.. Hang in there. I used to up until recently, like a year ago when he started middle school, still question the diagnosis. My son wanted friends, but his elementary school kids were/are punks. Middle school is soooo much better. He told his elementary school teachers, the reason he would still go to the mean kids is because he didn't want to be alone. The teachers also always said NO WAY to him having aspbergers. Give him time. These kids change daily. Any outside hobbies or interests? Mine loved video games, computer and legos at 10, still does!! Video games!! He's obsessed with them! I've had 2 drs say Aspergers was at least possible, so I don't know. I wish there was just an easy test to figure this out!! Do you live near Birmingham's children's???Does he have X-Box Live? this way he plays with kids - it is live. My son loves it!!We go to B'ham for his psychologist. Did you find something? I looked and could not.. He doesn't have the Xbox live. He plays the PS3 alone and doesn't want anyone bothering him when he does.
That is because he is hyperfocusing, mine does that too. AND gets frustrated when not winning. I read about Birmingham Children's when reading about a baby with damaged vocal cords. It is right now on AOL news. Poor baby. You mean to tell me there are NO psychopharms at this hospital??? I see that.. That's so sad..
None that I can find! I am shocked. WAIT i googled and found some. I will pm them to you!!
His noises are what gets him in trouble the most at school.
I read a every interesting book a couple of weeks ago called "Against Medical Advice". It's the story of Cory Friedman and his experience with Trouttes, OCD, Anxiety, etc. It's written by James Patterson and Hal Friedman. It does an excellent job of talking about tics from Cory's perspective and really helped me understand them better. The story is very inspirational. I just bought the book. Thanks! |
