Getting 5 year old to take Straterra | ADHD Information

Share
My son, age 5, was recently diagnosed with ADHD and began taking Straterra shortly afterwards.  He has taken meds his entire life with no difficulties what so ever.  But none were gel caps he had to swallow.  During the first week he took the capsule twice with no difficulties but it has gone increasingly downhill since then.  Having held it in his mouth too long several times, he tasted the "insides" and of course was immediately repelled.  Now, getting him to take the med is nearly impossible and we have to use physical force.  This is an awful way to start a day much less live a life.  If anyone has any suggestions on how to get a 5 year old to swallow a pill...convince him it isn't nasty....anything....please let me know.  We've tried everything...straws, applesauce, etc.

hi

if your son has had no problem taking medication before , and was able to get the first couple down maybe there might be another reason he's not swallowing them , ask him how they made him feel when he had them the first time , my son was older when they tried strattera , when l stopped them a short time later he told me he didn't like them cause he heard voices in his head . your son may be trying to tell you something

That's happened to my son a couple of times with his fish oil.  He's left it in his mouth too long and got the fish oil in his mouth-yuck! I think it gets stuck in his throat sometimes so he started leaving it in his mouth a long time to avoid swallowing it. I told him how the pills disolved when they get wet and that's why he could taste it. Now everytime I give it to him I say "oops, sorry I got it wet on accident.  You'd better take it really quick before it gets fishy tasting!" Believe it or not it's worked for him!
