They are threatening to exclude our son from PE all together!!! Our ds 'rough houses' and wrestles and likes to touch play...he struggles-you all are familiar with this.

I've asked his coach to set up a time so that we can sit down and get an agreed plan of action together.  What do you do???  Do any of your children struggle in PE? Every other teacher we've come in contact with is awesome, but this coach is our biggest obstacle, yet.

My son's PE teacher has not mentioned this. I see it when we are out or at the park though.  Is your son on ADHD meds? Could it be a sensory issue?

Any chance your school offers morning care?  Working parents can drop their kids off early before school begins.  My son is able to spend 30-45 minutes in the gym playing with other kids (dodgeball, scooters, etc)  He is 10.  This really helps him to regulate (he is a sensory seeker like the other poster).  We pay for for it but it is worth it and he is the first one in the classroom and avoids the  pushing that he was doing in line waiting with the other kids.

Also what about regularly schedule breaks from the classroom as a preventative measure?  My son trots stuff to the office, sets up chairs as needed, carries a weighted box supplied by me to the Resource room and so on--these break up his day and keep him active.

Good luck with the coach.  Part of his job is making PE work for ALL kids so stand your ground.

My son is still very young but he was very rough and touchy/grabby/push on EVERYONE before he was medicated.  Part of it is that he has Sensory Processing Disorder and is sensory seeking when it comes to touch.  He craves deep pressure and touch.  This, combined with his lack of impulse control (from ADHD) made him very rough.  He would just ram into anyone who was around! (including my 90 year old grandmother!!!! )  Once he got stablized on meds this pretty much disappeared.

Honestly, no. Because my son's meds are where they should be so that he has a successful day, we have not dealt with this.

BUT when he was 4 and at an integrated preschool and had not been diagnosed yet, and obviously not medicated, we did have this occur. His preschool teacher is who did this to him. She made him stay in the classroom while all the others went to gym and my son sat in the corner and looked at books.  This teacher with a masters degree and all sorts of education, kept riding me on giving him too much sugar (apple juice at the time )She was a complete nut. I called the head of the special ed. preschool, who also had a child with a severe disability and she was wonderful. She let me cry and get it out, and then she address the teacher. The teacher was soon after fired for something else she did to another family.

If this coach is part of the public school system, then he/she needs to get on board with what the other teachers are doing to accommodate your child. Does he have a 504/IEP plan? He could be seeking out deep pressure with the rough housing or it is impulsive inappropriate behavior that honestly simply can't control.

Contact the school!!

I haven't had this come up, but I do firmly believe that activity has a HUGE impact on ADHD symptoms (both in kids and grown-ups). PE seems like something we should get MORE of, not less...
