Anxiety Meds- please share your exerience

Hi, I also posted "What does anxiety look like in a 6 yr old" and we are seriously considering starting our DD6 on anxiety medication.  I think we have suspected anxiety all along with the ADHD diagnosis but just related the symtpoms as the stress and/or symptoms of living with ADHD.  Dexedrine has helped her but not with the 'worry, anxiety, stress'  The doc has suspected as well but wanted to try the adhd medication first along with the Respirdal and see how it goes.  When I look back now, more of her issues are anxiety related and not so much adhd related.

I have no experience or knowledge with anxiety medications in small children and was hoping for some experiences of others?  What should I ask for? or what is the doctor likely to perscribe?  Side effects?  Etc.  I know I can probably ask all of him this, but I am not sure how soon I can get in to see him and I like to know as much as I can before going in, if you know what I mean.

Did you see a difference in your child right away?  Does it take awhile to help?  Did any medications make the anxiety worse?

RCmommy40136.3300810185We started my son on 5mg of Prozac when he was in second grade. We
started to see improvement in about 5 days. The full benefit was realized
after about 2 weeks. The only way to describe it, is that he just was more
flexible and his "fuse" was longer. My husband and I would look at each
other with wide eyed amazement.

He is now in 5th grade and we just recently went up to 10mg. He takes this
along with his ADHD meds.

There have been no side effects.I don't know much about anti-anxiety meds but one thing is for sure that you need to do is to make sure you have your daughter in counseling.  Medication will only provide part of the solution.  The rest needs to come from behavior modification.

(note: ALL medications have side effects.  you just may not be aware of them at the moment )

Good luck to you both!

Good luck with your situation. With a child that small, im sure you worry about every single medication that they put her on. I imagine it can be quite nerve wrecking to worry about your child as much as you must, but of course I would to, any good parent would. And good for you for going online and asking around in order to do the best you can to understand your child's situation and help
her.

Good luck and I hope you will keep posting and let us know how your daughter is faring.
