stopping and starting meds.. | ADHD Information

well i don't have a child, so i can't comment on that part of things, but i myself can actually say that i do know what you are referring to. When I stop my meds, for whatever reason, I do feel more "alive," like my personality is coming back. But then after a couple of days the reasons why I am on medication in the first place make themselves readily apparent and remind me why I need to be taking them. This is especially true with adhd meds, in fact that is mostly what i am referring to. I know you don't want to feel like you are draining the life out of your child, but just remember that despite what it may seem, you really are doing what's best for him. When he's older and better able to understand what he is feeling and better able to vocalize those things, then things may be different. But for now, despite what it may look like, you really are doing what's best for him, and what you see is really probably not as bad as it looks like.
But if you really feel like you want to make a change regarding this, maybe take him off the meds for a couple of days a week, the days when he least needs it (i.e. when he's not at school on the weekends.) Give him some time for his personality to shine again a little bit on the weekends and liven up a little, before he has to start a new school week. Hope I helped give you some perspective on things. Good luck.

does anyone notice that when stopping a med it's like your child comes back to life?? but with my kid it doesn't last....he gets back to his non compliant state of not wanting to do anything........then we try a new med and he has a good week or so, then goes back to his rut after adapting to the med.

i think he gets out of his rut b/c something is going on in his brain, like he's paying attention b/c it feels new/different??? i have talked to his doc about this and he said it is possible to do a week on a week off.

anyone??

My son doesn't seem like he comes back to life but he does get where it seems like the meds aren't working as well. His doc has us up his dose slightly on the weekends then go back down throughout the week just to keep his system from getting "used" to the one dose.  It seems like once his body get used to the dose it becomes less effective.  The doc said that my son is just one of those types of kids that can't be on a steady dose for too long.
