increased med dosage | ADHD Information
It also seemed to wear off my son overnight. It wasn't a graduall thing. We increased his dose, and were back to normal.
I'm reletively new here. My son was diagnosed with ADD last spring and was having so many problems at school and in group activities that we decided to start medication right before school started. It has been amazing. He is able to focus and learn and get his work done. But very suddenly, he is back to his old self. My question is this: When any of you have had to increase medicine dosages, has it happened suddenly (an overnight change), or have you seen it come about gradually? I'd really appreciate any input. Thanks! -Cindy
In my son's experience with meds, the stimulants seem to work right away when we've increased his dose, within a few days anyway..good luck
My son is 8 and weighs only 40 pounds. We have tried various medictions. Two years ago, his reaction to stimulants was to be just as hyper as normal and increasingly hyper the longer he is on them. He also cried in school frequently on them.
He has been on staterra for a few months. It helps mildy with the hyperactivity, but not much with the focusing.
We decided as he is older to try Metadate CD, but again at ten, then twenty, then twenty-five, he has been increasingly hyper and weepy. He also has had trouble sleeping. Not getting to sleep until midnight or later. Has anyone else had trouble with these symptoms. Will they go away? Will his weepiness and sleeplessness go away? Any suggestions?
thanks in advance.
As I am learning more about the medicine I think it is all based on trial and error. Unfortunately this is a long process. My daughter was diagnosed with adhd one year ago, she was put on concerta and it worked wonders at first, she had the best grades she has ever had. The only think I noticed as the year continued it started to wear off and she became very defiant and hard to get along with. Just authority figures, it finally got out of hand and I thought we should look at maybe going to strattera. As we were starting the strattera we were told to keep her on the concerta until we worked the strattera into her system. This is when her temper got really bad and out of control. I don't know if it was the medicine or not. I took her suddenly and completely off the concerta now and she is on only 40 mg of strattera but her mood is much better already and she seems happier. But, she also was put into some very heavy conseling right now. I saw a total about face though in one day of no more concerta. She is much more hyper but happy. unfortunately she will probably fail some classes as it is too late to turn some grades around and going from a 3.25 to who knows what will be hard. I am so glad to see her happy for today. Just taking one day at a time right now. She is 15. Good luck There is a new medication available for ADHD. It is called Methylin Chewable Tablet and Methylin Oral Solution. It has the lowest dose of methylphenidate approved at 2.5mgs. That is great because the physician can start with the lowest possible dose using a stimulant then titrate up to optimal controll. In addition, so many children have difficulty in swallowing tablet and pills that this allows for increased patient compliance. In addition, it is convenient for the parents when giving their son or daughter medication. You can visit the pharmaceuticals company website at methylin4kids.com. Thanks and I hope this helps those parents that are having difficulty in getting their children to take their meds for their ADHD symptoms.
