tenexHello all. Ds was put on tenex .5mg am and .5mg dinner time, along with Ritalin la10mg am and 10mg after lunch. He has ALOT of anxiety. There didnt seem to be much difference. It did take me about a month to get him to that full dose just because I was scared of sedation. His teacher told me about 2 weeks ago that he was awesome! Calm, focused and amazing! Then after thanksgiving she said it was like he was never on it. He did have increased anxiety, tics and pacing. My son is 9 and said he didnt want to take the ritalin anymore. This is a huge deal, because he has always been very hard to read as far as how he feels on any given med. He never gives a solid answer, he usually shrugs and says I dont know. So we stopped the ritalin on a trial basis and increased the tenex a bit per doc. We have been playing this game for over 5 years. His teacher kept saying this breaks her heart because she saw what he "could be" and I must be devistated that its not working. I am exhausted trying to comfort my childs teacher! Knowing I will have to start over again next year with a new teacher. I tell them ALL that the only consistent thing about Seth is his inconsistency but they always try to make him what he could be instead of working with who he is and that makes me sad. I love him and think he is the cats crazy meow.It is heartbreaking when the meds stop working. Like you said, we know how they can be, and it's so hard watching them struggle.1/2 mg of Tenex is a very low dose. How about going higher on the dose? Also, Tenex might not be enough to control his anxiety. Has the doctor suggested adding Zoloft or another SSRI medication? I hope you find something soon to improve things. I know exactly where you are coming from. My DS is ADHD and Asperger's and it makes me crazy sometimes that the school is always trying to change him to fit the "typical" mold; why can't they just accept him for what he is. If he wasn't so "close" to "typical" they wouldn't push so hard. My DS is also on Tenex after years of stimulants. This fall the stimulants failed him and he began to have horrible side effects; anger, irritablity, aggression. We also have him on a small dose of Risperdal but it wasn't enough to counter the stimulants side effects so our dev. ped. wanted to try Tenex. We started right before Thanksgiving and he was amazing the whole long weekend. Calm, happy, sweet, compliant, willing. He did seem a little sleepy but nothing major. When he went back to school they complained he was lathargic, sleepy and cold all the time. So... we lowered his dose and all the old behaviors started to come back. I reupped it this weekend and now it's as if he doesn't take it at all. He had a horrible day at school today. The teacher called to make sure we had given him his meds before school. I too am exhausted from talking to teachers and trying to explain things to them. We go back to the dev. ped. tomorrow and I have no idea what she's going to suggest now. I'm tired of doctors, teachers, nurses, etc... This all very exhausting. My DD(14) has ADD Inattentive/OCD and stimulants really increase her anxiety. To help with this we added Zoloft to her Vyvanse. She came to me in October and said she felt awful, her OCD was bad, and she felt spacy all of the time on 200mg of Zoloft. Now she is off Vyvanse and on Intuniv, and we decreased her Zoloft to 150mg. She is alot happier, and feeling much better. Stimulants can really be a problem to those kids prone to anxiety.Good luck! Heather Im having to wean him off the Tenex. He was having some psychotic issues. Talking to imaginary friends, swaying, staring off into space. We have exhausted all meds. He is in 3rd grade and I just think we are screwed. I dont know what elese to do. His anxiety is bad, his tics are bad. He gets all A's and B's. We just had a big meeting to ammend his IEP. He will be in a more closed classroom setting and more 1on1. He will get more social worker time to try to get better tools to handle his anxiety. Guess we will stick with Ritalin. He just has tics and anxiety with or with out it! |
