Converting from Tenex to Intuniv?I know Tenex is short-acting guanfacine, and that Intuniv is long-acting guanfacine. I'm curious how people have done converting from one to the other. Did you stop Tenex completely and start Intuniv, or did you taper down Tenex and slowly increase Intuniv? Also, is it true that effective dosage usually is double the Tenex dose? My child takes 1 mg am of Tenex and 1.5 mg pm. Does that mean I should anticipate either 2 or 3 mg working best for him? Any other advice for someone about to make the switch? I'm waiting until winter break to do it, just in case it doesn't go well. Our doctor said that since DS(11) was already taking 1.5mg of Tenex he could start with 2mg of Intuniv. We tried that, but it gave DS terrible headaches. So, we just followed the directions on our sample kit. We did 1mg for a week, 2mg for a week, 3mg for a week, and 4mg for two days. DS said that he thought 3mg was enough. Our doctor did not mention how Intuniv should be double the dose of Tenex, but we didn't see any significant improvement until he was on 3mg. The transition has been a little rough since he didn't have the full medicine effect on 1mg and 2mg. But my plan was to get him up to 3mg, keep him on that alone(no Daytrana) over Christmas break, and then see if he can do Intuniv alone when school starts again in January. Good luck! Heather Our doc said at least double the dose.... he gave us a script for 3mg Intuniv but I'm waiting for my insurance to cover it so he isn't taking it yet... Audrey |
