Melissa, thanks for your reply. I really hope the new medication works for your son. Do the Doctor's think he will outgrow this "classic tardive dyskinesia"? I have never heard of this before......you learn something new everyday. Good luck and keep us posted.

maw51121, good luck with the Intuniv! I hope it works for you!  Just remember the Intuniv takes a while to build up in the system so don't give up if you don't see results right away.

Tarina,

My ds was not symptom free for 3 yrs. He had the tic since day 1 but at 4 yrs old we were told by his ped that it was a habit. He seldom did and over the yrs has progressed. It has become a big problem over the last few months and noticable by others now as well. Risperdal claimed they did not know of the side effect of tardive dyskinesia in 2006 when he began it. Now it is well known that it can cause it. It is not tourettes as he has classic tardive dyskinesia and no others symptoms of tourettes.Even his ped who got us on it says it is definately from the med and wishes he knew earlier.

Regarding parenting skills, both of us have taken him to child psychologists over the yrs since 3 yo to help us better parent him. I read constantly on dealing with his behaviors. We do not hit ever, and yes like almost all parents of adhd kids, frustration leads to yelling at times but I pride myself in my usual tolerance of the disease.

My response to you was bc as I mentioned your dealing were so similar to mine. My immense frustration right now is that he is on NO meds unlike before and the drastic change for the worse is hard to take.

We got the starter pak today for Intuniv as my priority is school and not letting him slip.He is high level in all topics and other than his antics with behavior excels amazingly. That however is changing some since no meds. I refuse to let a smart kid suffer bc his mind cannot allow him to thrive.

I wish you the best luck with your new plan. We tried all sorts of behavior strategys over the yrs with no luck.Concerta went terrible for us as well.Keep me posted on your progress. I REALLY hope this new med goes well for us starting Sat.

Best wishes

Melissa

Hi, you replied to a message I posted (thanks!).

You said your son has been on Risperdal for 3 yrs but recently developed a tic caused by the med's. How do you know it's caused by the meds especially if he had been on the med's for 3 yr's trouble free. The reason I ask this is, adhd childrens are more prone to getting Tourette's (which is a tic) and therefore, is it possible he would have got this tic meds or no med's?

I actually suffered from Tourettes when I was younger (I recall from around age 8 to early 20's) and then it basically ceased. Mind you, I do think I had a mild case of Tourettes compared to how serious it can be.

My son has a few minor habits which are basically a tic but in a different form. My son has a habit of rubbing his chin on his neck area however, its only randomly and not that regular. I do think my son is predisposed to getting tics but I just hope he dosn't get them too serious.

We went to see our Physc this a/noon and I have a pescription for Dexamphetamines (unsure spelling) however, I'm too scared to get script filled.

I live in Australia and we don't have as much medication available as you guy's in USA.......we have Dex, Ritalin and Concerta.

Me and my husband are going to sit down this weekend and do a family rule system and a reward system and we are going to put behaviour strategies into place and be consistent. We will try this for a few months ( I'm thinking 3 mths) and see if it has any impact on my sons behaviour. If not, we will have to resort to medication.

Have you tried behaviour strategies consistently with your son and did anything work? I've been told that yelling, screaming and smacking does nothing but the complete opposite for ODD children. We were being strict with our son but it seemed to have the reverfse effect on him.

My son also has no playdates and I've had 3 parents of children in my sons class in the last few months talk to the teacher about incidents with my son and teacher has had to talk to me about them.

Anyway, better go now. I could sit here and type my life away..........I dont have anyone to talk to about my son. I have my husband but after years of dealing with my sons behaviour me and my husband have drifted way, way apart.

I hope you find the right med's for your son.

Tarina
