Hi,
Thanks for checking in on us. My son (5 years old, dx PDD-NOS, hyperactive, impulsive, irritable) is on day four of Risperdol. We're seeing a decrease in his irritability. Most importantly, my son hasn't started any fights with his 3 year old brother. Even better, today he actually initiated a positive interaction with his brother - he showed him how to do a "proper" high five. I know this may seem like a minor thing, but it's actually an incredible change because he has NEVER been warm or nurturing towards his little brother. He also told me details about what he did in school. This is also a major change. Usually, I have to press hard to get a general outline of his day, and I've never gotten any details, ever. I also observed him playing legos with a friend. His friend used a toy hammer to break a lego creation. My son would normally jump in and do the same, then take the hammer go crazy. Today, he sat back amused and laughed at his friend's antics without grabbing the hammer. I guess the common thread in all my above is that I'm seeing a general decrease in irritability and an increase in sociability, like a general calm has come over him.
Wow, these are little things that other's take for granted that mean the world to us when done how they should be done. I can totally relate about the lego/hammer part..............my son would have grabbed the hammer and gone crazy and it would have been difficult to get him to calm down or even stop him from there on. I hope things continue to improve.

I am so glad to hear your son is doing well with the meds. With your son calming himself down, that must have been an amazing thing to see and more so with using tools you had taught him. As my son will be on school holidays, we are considering commencing med's around 5th January as my son has an appointment with the Ped 13th Jan so it gives just over a week trial of meds.
I'll keep you posted and I hope things continue going well.

Tarina,
Our sons really sound alike. Once mine starts acting out of control, it's a lost cause.
I'm still seeing good results on the Risperdol. I'm watching my son use the behavior tools that we've been teaching him for the past few years. Today when he was wound up, he calmed himself down by using deep breaths. Not only was this the first time he ever calmed himself down, but it's also the first time he used the tools that we've taught him. I'm completely taken aback by all of this. I keep saying, "Wow, he was actually listening to what we said for the past three years!" It's such a good feeling to see him controlling himself.
I hope that all is going well for you as school break approaches.
Hi, just wanted to check in and see how your son was doing on the Risperdol. It sounds like you guy's have alot more med's available in the States. I'm in Australia and the only one's I know of are Ritalin, Dexaphetamines and Concerta. My Paed say's Adderall is in the State's but the other's you guy's mention, I have never heard of. Apparantly in Australia they start all adhd children off on the Dex's. I have a script written out this week but we have school holidays coming up next week for 7 weeks so I thought it would be best to try them whilst were at home .
Thanks to everyone else who responded to my post.
