Tenex-How many doses a day??

My DS (ADHD & Aspergers) is almost 10 years old and is currently taking Tenex and Risperdal for his ADHD and Asperger's.  He's taking two doses a day of Risperdal (.25mg each) and three doses a day of Tenex (1mg, .5mg, 1mg) and I'm curious what dose other people are using.  We just increased his Tenex dose to the current level on Monday and he is very tired.  Yesterday and today he actually fell asleep watching TV.  Previously the school had complained of sleepiness on a lower dose but his behavior still wasn't great so we increased the dose over the Christmas break so he could get used to it.  I'm wondering if the middle dose is necessary and if it's just making him too sleepy.  I'm worried about sending him back to school on Jan.3rd.  I know each child's dose is indivual to their own body chemistry but I'm curoius as to what doses other's are giving.  Thanks!

bkrusen40177.8171180556We do 1 mg  am/pm.   She is also on Concerta.

My child used Tenex twice a day, but I've heard that some use it 3x per day.

Has your child ever tried stimulants?  Maybe it would be worth a trial?

My son is trying a new medication over Christmas break so everything is different right now but he was on Tenex .5 in morning/.25 in afternoon/.5 at night before bed this was along with Ritalin.  Now he's on .25 3 times a day along with Strattera.  He's always sleepy for a few days when we increase the dose. Logan'sMom40178.2996759259Mom2ADHDboy - My DS was on stimulants for years (ritalin & focalin & recently tried Adderall) but recently they stopped working well for him.  Bad side effects and rebound.  I asked the doctor about trying the stimulants again with the Tenex but she doesn't want to go that route yet.

Ds is on 1mg a day, I dont think its making any differnce other than he has tics now, his behavior is still bad.  He is constantly bored unless the tv is on or hes playing video games.  He blurts things out alot loudly and says things untrue for attension.  I am becoming so overwhelmed just trying to control his behavior and my 4 yr old is copying the 9 year old with problems.  His pyschitrist wants to start him on a low does of risperdone sp?  Because he feels he has aspergers as well and could take the edge off.  Its so hard trying to teach my son the right way when medication isnt correct its waste of time.  I dont know if I should go ahead with the other med or maybe see someone else and get second opinion, I just know im so tired and stressed trying to make the best possible choices for him.

Our DS, age 7, is taking Tenex.  1 mg in the morning and 1 mg at night.  We homeschool so I am able to monitor his behavior all day long.  We do not see a noticable change in his behavior mid-day such that would warrant a dose around noon.  DS has been on Tenex for 5 months now and we don't see any signs of tiredness.  When he started taking it ... he was tired early afternoon and even napped for a day or two.

engiishmuffin,

I know what you mean about feeling like it's a waste of time trying to teach him things when the meds aren't right! My son was the same way! Before we got his meds right there was just no use in trying to teach him.  Even at his best, he would only be able to control his behavior for a day or two then he'd go off the charts again! If you trust your doctor then I'd say give the new medication a try.  You can always stop it if it doesn't work.  If you aren't sure that you trust the doctor then there's nothing wrong with trying someone else!  Good luck!
