My son cant fall asleep! | ADHD Information
My son takes Vyvanse 50mg every morning around 6-7am. There have been too many nights that he just is unable to fall asleep, causing him to stay up tossing in bed. He will try watching tv and fall asleep to his tv shows, but that doesn't seem to help him. He can't fall asleep in his own bed, because he has been with me every night. I talked to his psychiatrist and she pretty much prescribed trazadone, without any hesitation. Sometimes it has worked sometimes not. Does anyone know if he is too stimulated from playing his computer game and watching tv pretty much up until bed time? He's not a little boy anymore, he's 12, and I don't know what type of bedtime winding down activites to try with him, for him. PS. I hate using trazadone for him to sleep.Yes, the TV/Computer can over stimulate them before bed. It's both the content of what they are watching/playing as well as the light/refresh rate of the screens. It over stimulates the brain. I've been told no screens two hours before bed time and there should be no screens in the bedroom.
A good bedtime routine is needed for good sleep hygiene. Does he like to read or play games? TV goes off, shower, perhaps a game or read together, listen to an audio book - anything that is relaxing. Do the same thing every night and it should help wind him down at the end of the day.
My youngest daughter takes concerta and also tenex. The tenex help her be less wound up in the evenings and she usually has a much easier time falling asleep. Melatonin also work well for her when she has trouble falling asleep.
