I wouldn't worry to much about the med's affecting her being able to do her school work.  If anything, it will help her focus better on her work.  If her work starts to suffer or she has a bad reaction to the meds then it's time to go back and try something different.  My son takes medidate cd and straterra.  He just started the strattera this year and he is having the best school year this year.  We have been having some stomach problems, getting sick a bit on the way to school.  But have given him more food before he takes pills and is better now.

My son has been trying Strattera since Xmas break.  He hasn't had any problems with it affecting his personality.  If anything he's actually sweeter than he was on stimulants.  The problem is that it's turning out to be not enough for him!

Aaron'smom, which did your son take 1st,  the Metidate or Strattera?  Strattera by itself is not working well enough for my son so the doc is putting him back on Methylin along with the Strattera.  He's better since he went back on the Methylin but the dose is still too low and I think he's going to go up to where he was before.  Why was your son put on both?  Does Metidate control some symptoms and Strattera others?

I wouldn't worry about Straterra affecting your DD's talents. My DS also reacted badly to Concerta, and is now taking Straterra. The only down-side is that it doesn't help with hyperactivity, but the ability to focus is WAY better. If you look up the scientific difference between the meds, you'll see why I think Straterra is better for some kids. It's what's called a selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor. I, personally, think my DS needs some of his neurotransmitters to function. But, lots of children do great on Stims, so I'm not saying Straterra is better for everyone. All of my family was afraid that meds would ruin who DS was. Not the case. He is still creative, still happy-go-lucky, still taking in every bit of knowledge available to him, still all the things that made him unique and wonderful. I hope you find the same sort of results with your DD.

My 7 year old daughter was diagnosed with ADHD innatentive last summer and we tried Concerta with terrible results.  She did not eat or sleep and picked at her skin like a meth addict until she had open sores.  We are seeing a specialist team next week for further assessment.  I assume they will prescribe the only non-stimulant (strattera).  I am concerned about that too but will try it.  My biggest concerns are that she was also diagnosed as gifted with an iq in the 140s.  I know, however, that her mind works differently than other kids and I am concerned that the meds will mask her abillities.  She is also very talented musically and is quite creative.  Again, my concern is that the meds will dull these talents.

I would appreciate any advice/experience with strattera and whether it has had an effect on personality, creativity and intelligence.

Hi. He has been on the medidate for about 4 years.  Started at 10 mg and now and has been for awhile at 50.  We started the strattera this last fall.  It is helping him focus better at school.  We tried concerta over the summer for a couple of weeks, but it was like no medication.  You really know your med is working and you switch and it is like night and day.
