Hi. I'm new here but have been lurking for the last year. I have got some ggod tips off you guys. Here's my story:

My dd is 7 and she was diagnosed with add last year in kindergarden. Her doc said it was very mild so we didn't do anything yet. She was reevaluated in Dec. and he wants to try her on meds. (She just has the innattentive type) I am not crazy about putting her on meds. I don't completely rule out meds but I just want that to be the last option. I have read about fish oil and have heard good things however, I talked to my pharmacist and he said he wouldn't advise it at that young age. When I talked to her doc at her appt. I mentioned it and he said it does work for some kids but didn't tell me whether she could have it. I don't know whether to try it or not. For those of you that use it how much do you give? I have just recently started the marble system on Friday and she has been responding to it at home but she hasn't had school since we started so I'm hoping between that and the fish oil she'll improve.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

My 40 lb, 6 yr-old son takes "Children's DHA." I give about 500 mg, but the bottle says to give twice that. I'm working him up to 4 pills a day, but he doesn't really like to take them. I've heard around 1200 mg is a good dose. I don't think it's "dangerous." The bottle says not for children 3 and under, so I would think a 7-yr-old would be fine. I've heard the ones high in EPA are the best. I can't tell you whether or not they help, as my DS also takes Straterra and I haven't tried him on just fish oil. The ped has no problem with him taking fish oil, he just recommended not taking it at the same time as his meds, so that the oil wouldn't interfere with the absorption.
Oh, just a side-note, I buy fish oil that is specific for kids, so it can be chewed or swallowed whole. My son chews his, and doesn't complain too much about the flavor. Funny thing is that the bottle say "great strawberry taste", but he says they taste like bananas, and I agree! LOLMy daughter, now 8, started on fish oil at age 7. She is also inattentive,
hyper but not extreme, and has anxiety. As she grows up, we could see her
becoming more calm, but anxiety and attentiveness was not improving.
Since the fish oil, her anxiety has improved, but not her attentiveness. She
takes 2 MorEPA mini juniors per day. You give 1000 mg a day of high epa fish oil, but based on my exhaustive research and using it on two kids for 5 years I seriously doubt that it helps the symptom of focus. Stress, yes. Impulsiveness, somewhat. From an alternatives standpoint, focus is the elusive symptom that nothing but meds seems to touch.Thank you guys for the advice. I really appreciate it. her teacher has sent home some really nice notes this week so hopefully the marble system will keep working for her. I have cut back her tv watching except on weekends. She goes to dance class and has no problems there ??? She has an appt. with her doc next friday and I'm going to ask him about any other alternatives. Thanks again!!!!!!

I have tried fish oil with my son 1000mg a day for about a month and we did not notice any change in his focus or behavior, he did get quite gassy, and when we stopped the pill the gas went away. I've heard alot of good things about omgea 3s and fish oil but we had no luck.  We also intend to start the marble system within a week or so, and going to see his pediatrician tommorrow about non stimulant meds, I have my fingers crossed :D
