Public Vs. Private school - PA

Kiran,

My kids are in a regular private school that is not geared towards kids with learning disabilities. That being said, probably more than half the kids there have some sort of learning 'difference' going on. Many are gifted, which comes with a whole host of difficulties (perfectionism, easy frustration, etc.), and quite a few look ADHD.

I looked at most of the private schools in the area, and that's what I suggest you do. Just call and make an appointment for a tour, and then see how you feel about the school, the teachers, the principal, and how it looks like the other kids are doing. I think it's really about choosing a school where you feel like they'll work with you and communicate with you. The willingness of the school to accomodate and teach my daughter how to organize her own thoughts has made such a difference, even in the half-year we've been there.

My daughter was less than impressed with the idea of changing schools at first, but after 2 weeks at the new school she settled right in. I think what made the difference was she made some friends, and we had some playdates with her old BFFs from public school. Then another new girl joined the class so she wasn't the only new kid, and that helped a lot too. Any change is going to be difficult, but it's worth it in the long run, and your daughter will realize that with time, even if she's a bit upset with you now.

I hope that's helpful!

Thank you...this is so helpful! Kahvi,

Thank you for your advice!  I am glad things have worked out for you.  If you don't mind answering some questions for me, I'd appreciate it!  Our daughter got diagnosed within the last week and we are very overwhelmed.

Did you place your kids in a regular private school or a school especially geared towards children with learning disabilities?

We live in chester county PA and looking at schools like Crossroads, Woodlynde and Benchmark that are geared towards LD children.  Did you get any resistance from your daughter with regards to changing school?

Thanks again!
Kiran
Hello,

I am a new member.  My 8yr old daughter recently got diagnosed with ADHD.  She currently goes to a public school.  She qualifies for a 504 but not IED.  I am struggling with the decision as to whether a private school that deals with children who learn differently may be a better setting for her.  We live in Chester County, PA...any advice, suggestions?

Thank you!

Kiran
Hi Kiran,

I'm a mom of an 8rd old daughter who has attention difficulties, and a 6yr old son who has a pretty severe mood disorder. Last year I made the decision to put them both in private school, and it's been the best decision I've ever made. My daughter does not take any medication for her ADD because the school works with us every day to help my daughter better organize her thoughts and her work. They're teaching her lifelong skills that will hopefully help her avoid meds in the long term. She's given extra time to complete schoolwork, and because there are only 8 students in the class, she's never left out of anything, and (most importantly!) the teacher realizes immediately if she's having trouble. In the public school system she skated by in the back of the class, and I didn't realize until last year that she was behind in most subjects, despite being very bright. I definitely think a private school is worth a try for your daughter! It's worked wonders for us.
