H1N1 and Elevated ADHD Symptoms | ADHD Information

Hi everyone.  I very rarely post, but I really need some help.  My 7 yr. old son has ADHD and Sensory Integration issues.  He often flapped his hands, jumped and liked touching silky items.  He was on all types of medications but they really didn't work so last June 09 we stopped meds. after school let out.  He totally blossomed into a much more social, witty and more focused child.  All the sensory issues ie. jumping, etch went away.  Totally went away.  We didn't put him on meds in September when school started.  His teachers reported he needed reminders, but overall his grades were good and he was doing well.  On 11/4/09 I took him to get his influenza and H1N1 shot.  The shot contained thimerasol.  Three weeks later, a noticeable change was seen.  He became less focused and seemed "in his own world" and the jumping started again with the sensory touching silky things.  For kids 7 years old a second H1N1 shot is required.  On 12/14/09 he received a second shot.  2 1/2 weeks later my son's behavior just simply nose dived.  His teachers brought it to our attention that they see a "marked decrease" in his ability to perform tasks at school.  He is jumping around the house and is constantly fidgety.  His sensory issues are bad also.  We are at our wits end.  His diet hasn't changed, no environmental issues, no apparent stressors.  My husband and I have given this alot of thought and cannot find any reason for this recent loss of functioning ability.  The only one thing that is new to my son was receiving the H1N1 vaccination.  Has anyone every heard of this happening?  Has anyone ever noticed a difference in behavior after receiving the H1N1 vaccination?  Thank you for your time.
H1N1 shot was rushed so they've been a lot of problems with
it.
The Study that linked autism with the MMR vaccine has been
retractedLuvmykids0240213.5906944444I'm sorry to hear things aren't working out for you. I didn't get the shot for my son, because we both got that flu before the vaccine was released. Hope you figure out what's up.Is Thimerasol the thing that's been linked to Autism?  I thought they were taking it out of all vaccinations?

Hi, if you were to do a google search under vaccination and autism/adhd, you would get huge responses. I have read many books re: adhd/autism etc....... with regards to the natural approach of treatment and they all state they believe vaccinations to be one possible cause/trigger of adhd/autism. I stress the one  as there are so many other possible causes/triggers. It is very interesting however that you have noticed a difference on 2 occasions after the vaccinations so I would say that was a good indicator for you of the cause/trigger. Where you go from here though,  I have no idea but I would be inclined to find out if you could report it to someone as someone must collect some data/feedback on reactions to vaccinations. Also, Im in Australia so our children have a vaccination aged 4 yrs and no others till 12 yrs old. Good luck.

Thank you for your advice.  I have reported my son's reaction to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).  He saw a neurologist today who is going to do bloodwork and do the IVA testing to confirm ADHD.  (totally unnecessary).  She also prescribed Intuniv.  We will be starting that on Saturday.  Hope it helps.  Any thoughts on the Intuniv?

I am sorry I have no info on intuniv, we are on guanfacine each day along with his concerta. that is working great for our son's needs.

I just wanted to get involved with the thread to wish you all the very best for your son and family.

My children have had a flu shot only once. After the anxiety over the needle, I never did it again. It was horrible.

Please let us know how your son is doing. The epidemic of autism diagosis' is horrific. Something is dreadfully wrong!

My kids got the H1N1 shot(s) w/Thimerisol and I did not notice any change in behavior.

What kind of bloodwork is your ds getting? (and now I will look up this IVA testing!)

My son has now been on Intuniv for 2 1/2 weeks and we are seeing good results.  He is tired often but I give him some caffeinated soda in the afternoon to conteract the sleep effect.  I have heard from others that the positive signs sometimes do not last.  I am hoping they last for my DS.  He has stopped jumping as much and tonight... homework was a breeze.  Please let it last. That's great to hear!  Hopefully it will keep getting better!  Keep us posted.
