medication and adhd | ADHD Information

We have a 12 year old son who was diagnosed with adhd at age 6. I knew
something was different from the time he was a baby. We are still stuggling
finding the right medication. For the last yr. he was taking stratera and
abilify. He just started getting the tics and having trouble completing tasks
at school/6th grade. six days ago he went on vyvance 20mg. he had one
fantastic day and went down hill ever since.   He just refused to do anything
at school. Stimulants seem to give him the tics, but the dr. thought since he
is older now we will try them again since he has to get something done at
school. I just wonder if he has other disorders besides adhd. At school he
gets frustrated and starts crying in front of the whole class. I don't know
where to turn.I'm sorry to hear this has been such a long road for you. Our doctor just
prescribed Vyvanse for 5 1/2 yr old today. He was doing well on Focalin, but
we felt it overpowered him too much and he would get glazed and withdraw
too frequently- it had many positives though. We're hoping the Vyvanse will
keep those positives, but be smoother for him, and he will still be himself.
Would you mind sharing how it went downhill for your son on that drug? It
must have been difficult after having a promising first day. Don't give up.
Also, perhaps there are anxiety issues involved as well ie the crying in class
etc? I know that you can use a combo of drugs to help both the ADHD and
the anxiety if you havent explored that it yet.Well, the 1st day on Vyvanse they told me it was like night and day. He
normally completed 25 math problems out of a 100. That 1st day he
completed all 100 independently. The second day at school when I picked
him up from the homework program he is in, they told me he refused to
do his math or english and began crying sooo loud they had to remove
him to the office. The principle talked with him and sent him back and he
worked with a teacher to complete his work. Today, they said he refused
to do anything in history. Yes, I know he has much anxiety, hopefully
the Dr. will add something for that. I'm wondering if the tics are anxiety
or the meds. We are going to explore the gluten free diet. Thanks for
your reply and I hope all goes well with the Vyvance. We are giving it till
tomorrow to call the Dr. back. We also go to a great private school that is
so kind and helpful, We have gone through many schools that couldn't
handle him.
