Adult ADD

hi  i am 39 adhd and have a child adhd i found out when i was 5 but when i was 16 the dr. told me it was only a child disorder.i was going to classes to learn how to take care of a child with adhd when i learned that you most likely never grow out of it.i found out i still had adhd and stared on wellbutren it didn't help me but every one is different. i take concerta now but i tried 3 different drugs before this one.the right one for you will be the one that helps you keep your mind on the task and finish whatever you started.i seem to have passed it on to my child but it wasn't something i caught from someone else it was passed on from one of my parent or grand parents.so don't blame yourself.good luck at least you found out most never do after adulthood.

hi sally, im 28yrs and im a mother of 5 boys, 3 of them have adhd, i was dignosed yesterday and have to have a brain scan and go on meds, my eldest son 9yrs is on strattera and ritalin, strattera is a herbal tablets which only helps him to sleep, to be honest with you ritalin is a controlled drug and has speed in!  i have to be put on meds myself and i cant for the life of me remember which one the dr said but i know its the slow release on and its not strattera or ritalin, i have to wait for the dr to send info to my own dr and then i should start it., i know what your going through and i blame myself for my children having adhd as they got it from me, it runs in my family both sides and thats why 3 of my kids have it so far, my last two children are only babies so i will soon find out, if you need to chat to me please email, i would love to keep in touch with you and we can nag eachothers head off lol, take care maggie x

Hi! Slayer18076, Welcome aboard, love your response to Sally, always "good" to discover people nearer to home, Ireland. The invite to nag each others head off is
what caught me, most folks are still reserved when it comes to "positive bitching" and here is a lady that can do with some. See you on the boards. An old male ADHDer. Sally "You" are a Hero, take a "Bow".

Hi! Slayer18076 and Ryan1950.Thanks for all the helpful insight and the words of encouragment!!MaggieX i'll chat anytime to relieve my frustrations instead of yelling at my kids and Ryan thanks for the hero thing my therapist tells me if he could give me a medal for living my whole life and learning to cope with this on my own that he would, i deserve it.i was talking to my mother who said when i was young out of 4 girls i was the rebel and most active, but she never thaught about the add because she figured i was doing ok in school so she just dealt with me now i have to deal with myself, lol. i just hope once started on the meds i'll start remembering things and finishing what i start! well you both take care and i'll be here anytime for both of you.     SallyK

hi sally, ryan ,wilsall6

i was a bright child learnt to read and write at 6yrs old and done well from there, it took me ages to do some work if i found it hard but i would chat like i was run on  batteries i was always in fights and i even hit a policeman when he said to me " I HATE FOULED MOUTH sl*gS LIKE YOU!"  i was helping my sister out at the time while out clubbing and i saw some bloke hit her so i dived over everyone and hit the bloke, then the bouncers, the police was called and because the top cop dragged me and i said i can f ing walk, well i was in heels at the time lol, i just go in such a rage that i dont know what im doing, its like i blank it out, it got to the point where i would hurt myself to try and calm myself before i hurt someone bad! you may think yeh ok a women that bash crap out of a man but when i go into one its like i have the strenght of 10 plus men! i dont like being like that, im really a luffly person whom feels for people, and im very emotional

i dont know how the hell i can cope with 5 kids plus 3 with adhd but i do, its like a warzone here when we go off on one, i love my kids and hubby and try my best not to freak out but sometimes it dont work like that

it dont mean were all nutters, ive been called that many times, least i and others can stick up for ourselves

its great to leave messages and talk to others that have adhd, i dont feel like im a total pratt when i talk rubbish and get hyper like i did last night lol

thankyou all for listening xx

I'm a 30yr old mother of 3 and just recently diagnosed with ADD.I haven't been started on meds yet but my options are strattera and wellbutrin. If anyone has any helpful information on these two or if one is better please share. My husband has been in iraq for 18mo. and will be home in 2 months, he's the one who suggested i go get checked for this disorder after reading an article in newsweek.I have a 10 yr old son who lives with his dad and has adhd so now i'm told he may have gotten it from me??? well i guess i just need some adult advice here and with limited contact from my spouse i'll take all the advice i can get.

Thanks, sally(military spouse in Germany)

Hi! Sally,
Welcome and remember  even though what you have just learned about "You" is a
shock and a real emotional rollercoaster, reading about ADHD and unloading are a
part of the process. I have not used either of the meds you mention but this I will
say, your doctor, whom i take it, knows you well if you have been a patient over a
good no. of years. His profile of you would lead her/him to recommend and it is a
common practice to trial different meds until the one that suits the person best is
identified. On the lightlihood of your son inheriting from you, that may be true and
i stress may, ok. Since ADHD is genetic and  science tells us that it  comes from
one side as a rule there is also a chance that it can be inherited from the male too.
There is, to my knowledge, nothing stopping it being inherited from both parents.
Someone told me, unfortunatly i cannot remember who, that ADHD has been also
found to skip generations. The statement, he may have gotten it from you, Wow!
that is one that hit Eh!. Read, Ask Question, Unload your concerns and be aware
that there are millions of people that are Diagnosed Adult ADHDers. Being alone
with your questions and conserns is no longer a reality for Sally K.
Congrats on getting this far.
