Going to try Metadate | ADHD Information

It sounds like the Medadate may not work for him if it aggitates him.  You may need to try another type.  My son was very aggitated on Adderall but better on Ritalin so another type may work for your son.

Another option is adding Tenex.  My son's doc added it to the Ritalin to help with the aggitation that was left and it worked very well.

Update: on the 1st day he came home off the bus like nut job. A note from the teacher said he had a rough day. The teacher attributed it to the fact it was a 1/2 day due to snow, but I questioned the new med. There was no school Fri due to snow, but I still gave it to him. He was very easily aggitated and nasty. Same thing Sat. It got late Sun so I didn't give it to him and he was pretty much the same, but more hyper.

I got an update from school and they say he's more focused, but more easily aggitated. I was told he was eating lunch.

I'll be calling the doc soon. What to do, what to do...

Thanks, I am going to speak to the doc about Tenex. I did in the beginning and he said we'll see. At least ds is coming home from school w/smiley faces on his daily report. I heard, tho, that he got mad at his para for taking away a token and tried to hit her. He came home w/the happy face, but a note that said Erik needs to work harder on keeping his hands to himself and saying nice things.

I am also getting back into the vitamin thing. I have been reading here about the +'s of PS and I did have a vitamin already with that in it. It's called Attentive and it's a big chewable wafer. It's like a giant Sweet Tart. He doesn't like it which is why we stopped giving it. Last summer after dropping him off at daycare/camp we would find the half-chewed, slobbery things in the back seat somewhere, lol! I also just picked up some more fish oil.

How much PS should one give an almost 7 yr old?

Thanks SueFin! Glad to hear it from a school psychologist as well

I'm not sure about that one.  Sorry!  We haven't tried it yet.

When my son was 7 1/2, we started him on Focalin XR for mild ADHD, primarily impulsivity and focus.  Over a few weeks we had to keep upping the dose to see effectiveness. Our ped then switched him to Metadate CD, and we saw better results and it lasted about 8 hrs. instead of 6.  Over three years later our son is still on Metadate CD. Over the years, he has gradually been increased from 20 mg. to 40 mg.  He is doing very well in school, so we are afraid to see how he would do without it, but we may do another trial without this Spring.  Side effects have not been bad- he was never a great eater or sleeper, so we can't totally blame the meds.  We still see some rebound in the evenings- he gets a little more mouthy and impulsive, but nothing horrible. I am a school psychologist and I try to mention Metadate CD to parents, because the peds tend to recommend Focalin, Adderall/Vyvanse, or Concerta, and I think Metadate CD is a good alternative.

Hope you have the success we have had.

Just got off the phone w/doc. It's been about a month now and I told him I think the Focalin XR is helping, just not long enough. He decided to have ds try Metadate to see if it lasts longer. It's the same class of med so I'm hoping ds won't have any new side effects. I asked about an afternoon dose of the Focalin, but he said let's try this 1st so ds doesn't have to deal w/going to the nurse everyday.

Any thoughts, warnings, experiences to share?
