New here, trying Vyvanse for 5 year old | ADHD Information

THanks for the advice. I ended up splitting the pill for the whole first week, and he is doing much better at school, not so much at home. Very emotional, crying at the littlest things, and then screaming at me for other things. The doc said to leave him on the half does the 15 mg until the end of the month and then we are going to try to go to 20. I am so glad to hear other peoples experiences so I know I am not alone!

My DS is 5 and we started on the Vyvanse about 6 weeks ago.  We have already tried Ritlan, Daytrona and Intuniv.  He is taking Vyvanse 20 mg and so far it has been a miracle drug for him.  However, we have crazy mornings before school and our evenings are INSANE!  The doctor added Tenex in the afternoon/evenings to help calm from the rebound.  I didn't think it was helping so they have added Strattera in the evenings.  We are just starting to build that up and honestly it seems worse behavior wise.

Just wondering if you all have tried anything else in the evenings to help with the rebound effect??

Vyvanse has been working well for my son too, however still trying to
find best dosage. It's currently a bit of a guessing game because the
lowest pill of 20 mg is too much. We've been splitting it with good effect,
but feel it's time to add a little more with the hope of building up to the
20 mg soon. Anyway,we haven't see HUGE rebound. Some irritabilty, and
emotion occaisionally but mostly just not too tired at bed time. he does
tend to get hyper as it's wearing off too. What typed of rebound effects
are you experiencing with your son? Our doc did warn us about the hyper
part, and suggested excercise about 6 or 630 for 30 min. He does seem
to crave that pyshical outlet around that time, and it's been helping. We
take him to park, playground or our roof deck to run around, or ride his
bike. He also gets melatonin at about 630 or 7 which calms him and helps
him sleep. He's been getting therapeutic doses of fish oil for years, but
since starting meds we give it at night because apparently supplements
can interferes with absorption and break down of meds. We feel it's still
important to give him the fish oil because t does help with moods, and
can be calming, so if you're having trouble with those things during
rebound discuss adding fish oil at night with your doc. I may have some
other sugggestions for you, but will be easier to give advice if you could
explain the details of the rebound. Also, my son is almost 6 yrs old

My daughter, 5, had a similar reaction to Vyvanse, so you are not alone. The doc tried adding Intuniv, which didn't work great for us, but perhaps could be an option for you?

I personally wouldn't give it much longer. Give the doc a call to let him know what's going on. He might want to see you again, try another stim from a different family, or tinker w/ the dose. You never know until you call.

Hi Lauren!
My son is 5 1/2 and was just diagnosed in Dec. We started with short
acting Focalin for about a month. It was really positive, but our doc
recc'ed Vyvanse because we were having a few issues with the Focalin. We
had a similar experience, and we are now only on week 2. He started with
20 mg but it was a disaster. He was very sad, irritable, quiet, falling
asleep. The doc said to split the capsule, and he had a great day the next
day! It has been better in some ways than the Focalin, but don't know if
it's better yet. The teachers were reporting some agitation and irritability
last week even with the half dose. Also, it's a bit of a guessing game
splitting it, though my husband is pretty accurate. I think it's tricky
guessing it, and a little too much can make a big difference. We tried
upping it a little because we worried he wasn't getting the full thereputic
benefit from half, and maybe even getting emotional because it was too
low a dose, but when we added another 1/4 of the powder he went back
to the way he was the first day. When we lowered it again just yesterday,
he was good. We are going to see how the school week goes, and then
make some decsions after discussing with doc. Hope this helps, at least
in that you don't feel alone...GL!Hi-
My son will be 5 and he was diagnosed with adhd. We have always known something was wrong, just not known what.. Then he was thrown out of 3 pre-schools and got the doc involved. The doc prescribed 30mg of Vyvanse and he had his first day Friday. It was horrible. He cried most of the day for anything. Yesterday I was hesitant but gave him 3/4 of the pill and we had an ok day. Today I gave him half of the pill and he has been terribly emotional again. Not sure what to do, how long to give it or what. Any advice would be appreciated!
