I like red! You?
In January at the neuro-pedi he was 44lbs. I need to weigh him again because I think he may have gained a little, actually. He comes home and chows down on everything in sight until bedtime. When we 1st started meds he didn't eat lunch at school, but he does now. He asked me for a today because it's Funnel Cake Friday, lol.
I'm pretty sure we'll be adding that afternoon dose when I call the doc next week. I wish I could just see what he's like on 10mgs at once, but I'm afraid to do it w/out the docs permission. I am going to tell him that I know of a 6 yr old boy who is 49 lbs and on 10 mg and we'll see what he says!
Logan's Mom, he gave us 60 of the 5 mg XR.
Mommy4David, you like the short acting better? Isn't that a tablet? Do you crush it?
Kathleen, doc says Erik is too small for 10 mgs. How much does your ds weigh? He poo pooed the notion that a larger does would last longer. For example, if you take 3 Advil, it's still only going to last as long as taking only 2, just kills the pain harder (and your liver, lol).
It's so difficult because I read stuff here that is real life experience and then the medical docs say oh no, that's not true. Blah!
I must say that both meds have helped his focus at school. He went w/out yesterday and a note came home saying he had a hard time focusing. Neither med has controlled impulsivity so much and he was less hyper on the Metadate.
Thank goodness for wine (for me!)
Hi Eriksmom, I hear ya on the wine part!!! Our ds is 49 lbs, or at least he was when he started back in December. I wouldn't be surprised if he's lost a pound or two. That's my biggest concern with this medicine, his lack of appetite during the day, but at least he has a good dinner and high calorie snack before bed. I know we need to trust our doctors and other health care professionals, but my experience has been different doctor, different opinion. The short acting focalin is a pill form and I was told should not be crushed, although you will find that some people do that...just like the sprinkles in the xr capsules. I was told specifically not to give a partial capsule, yet other doctors tell you it's ok. The short acting pill we sometimes give him on the weekends is not focalin, because he can't swallow pills yet, so takes methylin chewable tablets and seems to do very well on them. The nurse practitioner said it's in the same family as focalin. If his appetite doesn't improve, I am thinking of asking her if he can take one 5mg. methylin in the morning and then another after lunch at school. This way, the first should wear off by lunchtime....although he'll probably be a maniac in the cafeteria!Did you ever up the dosage to the 10 mg, or did you stay at 5? I think I mentioned to you that our son (recently turned 6) was on 5 mg. of the focalin xr for a week and then went to 10 mg. It definitely lasted longer and controlled his impulsivity better than the lower dosage. If your doc is against the 10 mg, what about a bump up of the short acting 5 mg in the afternoon? On the weekends we don't give him the XR, but sometimes do give him short acting 5 mg. for sports activities and/or Sunday school. This last about 3 hrs. and he doesn't seem to have any rebound issues. Plus, it's worn off by lunch so he eats well, which is a concern for us since during the week at school he doesn't eat much at all. Keep us posted!Try Focalin not xr. Daytana patch is good but yes it takes about 2 hours to kick in. Good luck
I spoke to the doc today about the Metadate CD making ds angry and nasty, so we're going back to Focalin XR. I liked the way he reacted to the Focalin, but it wasn't lasting long enough. Hyper rebound vs. a nasty child...hmmm, which is better?! The doc suggested we could try Daytana, but I feel that the patch would be a source of distraction. I also heard that it takes a long time for the patch to kick in (doc poo pooed this statement). He is giving us the script for an after lunch dose, but we're not to start that yet. He wants to go back to the 5mg XR, then call him in a week.
I just called the guidance councelor to warn her ds will be unmedicated tomorrow! She confirmed that he is focusing better, but definately more easily aggitated and saying not nice things.
