ADVICE about son’s MEDICATION | ADHD Information
So I've updating that Vyvanse at about 10 mg ( splitting the 20mg capsule in
half) has been working well for our son. However, we've had a few mild
anger flare ups and another not so mild crying jag happen. Can't say for
sure it's the med alone causing this because it has happened to some
degree or another when not on any med. But also saw him today at a school
function and feel like it's not taking enough of the edge off the hyperness,
nervous energy. Apparently he's still performing well in school, and is not
zoned like he was on Focalin- which is great!- BUT he's still soo jumpy,
hyper, biting his nails, etc on this Vyvanse like he wasn't before. I just
wonder if he's getting full benefit of med? I wonder if we should try
something else? Any thoughts from those whov'e been there done that?
Thanks! It takes a while for it to really get going for a child. It's weird reacting
differently, even if it's better, so kids need to adjust to that.
Also - how's he doing at school? It could be that you're not seeing the
medication at its full strength, so you're not seeing everything that's
going on.
I would definitely keep track of what's going on with your son. The anger
flare ups - are they what he was doing before or are they completely new?
(If they are totally new I'd tell the doctor about them ASAP.) Are they
fewer/less intense? Are they gradually petering out? Those are the kind
of things you hope to see.
As far as the secondary side effects - again, it could be just an
adjustment phase. But if they are new side effects and they aren't getting
better, talk to the doctor. It could be that it's not the right med for your
child.
My son was on Concerta and had a very negative reaction to it - he was
beyond angry. He's now on Vyvanse, and we had to adjust the dosage.
He's doing great now.How long has he been on this dose? He may be experiencing rebound as it wears off. It may also be that the dose is too low. I would definitely talk to the doc. Another option may be adding Tenex. My son takes it to help counteract the moodiness/aggitation that stimulants give him. It settles all those annoying side effects. If his crying or anxiety is caused by the stimulants (my son's was) then Tenex should help! nMy son started on 30mg, which was way too high for a 5 year old, I cut in half to 15 and so a big difference but was really stressed out every day if he didn't drink all his yogurt drink that I put it in because I wasn't sure what dose he was getting. FInally got on 20 and he is doing just fine. Not sure that I see a difference from being in the 15 catagory, but I am more at peace that I am not playing with the dosing. GOod luck!
