Previous drug use | ADHD Information
Hey there, I've just been recently diagnosed with ADD and
my psych started me off on stratera. So far (its been about
three days) the side effects are horrible. I've been
extremely pissy and irritable, among other things. I know I
respond well to stims (caffeine), but she refused to put me
on adderall because I used to smoke weed. I'm seeing
another doctor in about a month. Should I push for adderall
again? I haven't smoked for a while, and I've never been
addicted to a drug. It doesnt seem fair to me they're
withholding first line medication from me because of some
stupid stuff I've done in the past.I don't know about the addiction side of this question, but if the medication is giving you horrible side-effects, then it is not the med for you.
My son did fine with Straterra for the first few months, but slowly the side-effects worsened and worsened. Pissy and irritable are an understatement as far as I'm concerned.
He was having such bad mood swings that I could hardly stand to be around him. He would get stuck in some sort of adrenaline related "fight or flight" thing, and it was a good day when it was the flight side of things. The self injurious behavior and verbal tics were what finally clinched the deal for me.
There might be another med that works for you. I know that with a "history" of drug use it can be difficult, but if you aren't already seeing one, it might be a good idea to see a psychiatrist. They are the only ones really familiar with the way meds affect the brain and would be able to give you better care and treatment with this issue.
