Just a suggestion, Bethann, but does your insurance do mail-order perscriptions?
Your doc writes a script for a 90-day supply, you mail it to the mail order pharmacy your insurance uses, and the meds come in the mail. Your credit card is charged. You get a reminder e-mail a few weeks before it needs to be renewed so there's plenty of time to get a new 90-day script from the doc.
I thought this would be a hassle, but our insurance now requires we do it this way - I think it saves them money somehow. It's actually easier than dealing with the pharmacy people, I think. I always imagine the people behind the counter look at me strangely when I pick up Zoloft for a 5 year old.
My insurance does do mail order, however, I don't know of any one able to do mail order for the concerta, adderall's, etc.
Is there any one? I know it is not allowed for me. I contacted my insurance company and due to the nature of the med, it won't allow it.
I have the problem at CVS due to the problem with not educating the employees, as well as the problem with dispensing to those who are obtaining it illegally.
Unfortunately, both these things have become my problem.
Also, I was telling a friend at work about this situation, and she had the same problem at her CVS. So she never filled her daughters adderall. And her daughter quit taking her meds, she is 17.
What a mess!
Thank you Marykath for trying to help! It is really appreciated!
Thanks for your replies. I'm going to give the two meds together in the a.m. now and then the p.m. dose b4 dinner. The dinner hour is baaaad for us so pray it knocks him down a notch, lol.
Bethann, thanks for your kind words. I was feeling beaten down so I picked myself up a bit, took a day off work and made some phone calls. A counselor came over Sunday to interview us and in a few weeks I should be getting some help here at home. It's a 8 week program, but she thought he was on the border of level 1 and level 2 care so we could get more, like a mentor to out with him.
Sorry about your pharmacy troubles. I had a similar situation w/rudeness at our Rite Aide and then they combined w/Eckard and the Eckard pharmicists are better.
I forgot to mention...I noticed the same thing that Bethann's husband did. If I let my son eat before his stimulant it doesn't work as well and it seems to wear off sooner. I try to make sure he gets the pill at least a few minutes before he eats anything. I'm glad to hear that someone else has also noticed this. I figured it was just me!
Also, if there is anyone out there that knows of a mail order pharmacy that lets you get 90 days worth of stimulants let me know. That would be great!
Maybe because eating helps wash the pill down better? When I got the Metadate it said to take b4 breakfast, but the Focalin did not say that on the bottle. I was giving it after, but now I'm giving it b4. I think it says can be given with or w/out food. I know my thyroid med works best w/out food.
My doc said you have to get a new script every month for the stims so no getting the 3 months worth from the mail in. Kind of a PITA for this overworked, scatterbrained mommy, lol! Perhaps I should get some Ritalin for myself so I can remember to get his script
My son has been taking concerta and guanfacine combo for over 5 1/2 years. He takes them both together. first one then the other.
I am "guessing" the second dose is in the afternoon.
My husband also found that by feeding our son after taking the pills is better for the coverage. He says that our son isn't as successful when eating first and then taking the pills. The pills wear off sooner if he eats first. Just something we found for our son.
Did the doctor not tell you when to give the pills to your son? He really does sound uncaring as you posted on the other board! I agree with what your mom found out!
I read your post on the other board. Please don't feel beaten up. It is really hard being a mom to these adhd'ers. I still feel it after all these years. Hang in there, our kids are so worth it. ANd there is light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately we do have our battles. I am battling just trying to get my son's prescriptiong filled.
I live in a state that passed a law, unless it is federal and not state, that our psychopharm can write scripts for concerta, etc three at a time. So my son leaves with his script for right now, plus next month, and the month after that. The doctor has to write ADHD on the script. Do you know EVERY TIME my CVS tells me that my scripts are out dated!
I have the ruddest pharmacy in my town. THey also aren't training their staff, nor aware of laws!
I am very frustrated over this pharmacy at CVS in my town. All I want to do is fill the prescription. This has been happening since they changed the law, and that was several years ago. None of them are educated. It is very frustrating when you aren't doing anything wrong but are treated as if you are.
I may have my son's meds figured out at the moment, but I am battling the pharmacy just trying to get them filled. Isn't that pathetic!
Ok, it's 10:30 a.m. and I haven't given it yet. I gave him Focalin about 1.5 hrs ago and breakfast. I'm supposed to give 1/2 tab Tenex 2x's, I guess after breakfast and dinner.
How close to the adhd med do you give the Tenex. Same time? How about the Focalin b4 eating and the Tenex after?
Thanks for any help!
Our doc said to do the tenex in the a.m. and again at lunch. But, we haven't added any stims yet so I am going to make sure to clarify if they can or can't be given together. Let me know what you find out.
