medications when you can’t use stimulants | ADHD Information

So my son is 8yo and just the past few months have had to
pull him off all stimulants. He was going into rages and
became suicidal. We have tried metadate, ritalin LA,
Daytrana, Adderall, and Concerta. Concerta was the worst
one of them all.

We had just switched him over from Strattera due to a
possibility of it causing him to go into atrial flutter
and he required cardioversion to convert back to a normal
sinus rhythm. Don't freak out, he has a severe heart
defect and can go into arrythmias. But no more Strattera
since that seemed to be the culprit- interestingly enough
he has done well with the stimulants re: his heart.

Right now he is only on Trazadone which is helping with
his moods, but not the imulsive, hyper behavior.
Probably can't use tenex because he is already on 2
antihypertensives for his heart condition. So- any one
having any suggestions?

Call into psychiatrist- who wants to just stay off med
for a while. School is NOT happy about his behavior and
I have no idea what to do. AAAAHHHH.

thanks if you read this far:)

Hi Trisha,

Our DS, age 6, is off stimulants too because of tics/tourettes syndrome.  He is on Tenex and it does seem to be taking the edge off, but has very little effect on the focus or attentiveness.  Dr indicated that Rispersol (sp?) might be a drug to try.  But, because the side effects of that are compulsive eating and sedation..we opted for the Tenex.  I imagine that you are right about adding another antihypertensive ...

Wish I could be more help.. these little ones have so much going on.  Best of luck!
