Need help with studying | ADHD Information
if you go to a public university, you can ask for help through there special service department. All public universitys have such a department that helps studnets with disabilties, adhd, other learning disorders ect. most universities will allow you more time to take tests, give you help studing and so on. I work for a state university in GA and we have a great special service dept.
Check with your advisor and see if your school offers such a service.
I will be needing help myself next week I just started back to college, have a adhd child, work 40 hours a week, have adhd myself and will be going back to school full time.... I am getting that omg felling already
Welcome Ipolen, I went to school for health ins. billing & coding before I was officially DX'ed. I knew I had it, just didn't know how to go about finding a doc. I had trouble remembering what I had read, and I was so mad b/c other students also had a life. And most like me, also had a full time job!

What I found worked for me was to have my husband quiz me. Of course only after I had read the same thing 4 times
. Also, we were allowed to record lectures and other lessons. That REALLY helped me! I played it back at home, in my car(had to retire the Metalica CD's for awhile) And anywhere I could. I struggled, but somehow managed to get A's and B's. So if thats an option for you, give it a try!
Ritalin kicks asz for study People discount it as a "kid medicine" or a "old medicine." Simply nothing gives you more focus for study.
If you don't have ADD it will just make you wired. Here is me before Ritalin.
A:) I will hear an explanation, it sounds just like this:
---> "blah, blah, blah-blah." <---
At first I think the teacher's joking, or doesn't know how to teach but everyone in the class is nodding in agreement. At this point I should just give up and die (to make ranstermonster feel better about herself because she doesn't need drugs - and thus is superior.)
B:) OK no problem, I didn't understand the teacher but I have a good 6 hours I can spend on study tonight. I sit down at my desk: I have all the coolest pencils, the proper light, Mozart playing in the background etc. I open my textbook and read:
X is a result of the properties in Y:
So far so good, I then read all about the properties of Y, but my brain has already dismissed the topic of the chapter. There is no connection in my brain. I'm not aware that there is no connection, I think I'm studying; it's not till the next day when they spring a test on me I realize it.
I'm trying harder then the guy sitting next to me. I hear them in class talking about a party last night or how they got to sleep at 4:00AM. While I studied from the time I got home to 1:00am but I'm the one who fails the test, the guy who was up till 4:00am aces it. In one class (15 people, intensive class where we sit in a circle) I was called out before class and told I had failed. I was then moved to the lower class next door. It didn't matter if the teacher told the class I failed, at lunch time all my classmates came out for lunch and saw me sitting in the "dumb"class. Why? because I have ADD. People like Rantermonster don't seem to realize there is a person on the other end of all this. It's just politics and a future lawsuit to her, but it's my sense of well-being, my sense of self-worth. It's my future.
Fast Forward to Diagnosis and meds. Life is better, I still have to work harder, but now I am able to keep up.Try Desoxyn

I am a junior in college, and I am haveing trouble concentrating of my work. I have been on multiple medication but none seem to work, so i am forced to put up with my ADHD on my own. Does anyone have any ideas of what i could do to concentrated on my work. It takes me all day to fead six pages, and i do not remember anything i have read. My grades have suffered dramaticly and i am running out of ideas. Please help if anyone can. Thanks for you time.
One thing you can try that helped me was I would read out load into a tape recorder then listen to it a couple of times if I had to.
Anouther thing I did in college was to read a paragragh or two and write a sentence about it. this way I was thinking about what I just read instead of trying to remember what I read three pages back when I was thinking about ;this girl I saw last nite; can you breed monkeys with four asses; where did that fly come from.......
For me, personally, I had to take a very active approach to studying. I learn very little when something is on its way "in" (reading, listening), but can learn when things are on their way "out" (writing, telling, physically doing). When you are reading, don't try to read, try to take the information in the book and draw pictures or flow charts from it. Write a song or poem about it, whatever you have to. My "animal cell" in biology became a bustling train station complete with boxcars, various cargo, and an elaborate control room. Somehow I could rember that the boxcar loaded with trash for export was a vesicle carrying metabolic byproducts. Another thing that worked great was verbally repeating what I remembered of the lecture that evening. (you need to have a great friend, spouse, or dog who will submit to this). I always remembered that stuff without having to study it any more. Good luck!I haven't got the answer,

I only got dignosed recently and
havent started medicating.
I do thing at the last possible moment or not at all. But If I really
need something to be done I selfmedicate with coke 2 or 3
liters and do an all nighter dont recomment it. I am trying to get
along with out destroying myself but until now that was the only
way I could get things done.
In highschool I used to take glossary of everything the teacher
said or I would drift away (plus drinking alot of coke to keep
focus) and then I would for the exams I would rewrite all the key
glossary and put it up graphicly and redraw pitcures if they
were relevent or try to make my own explaination drawings of
subject to understand it better. And if I have time I would try to
run through the book usually absent minded but when I
crossed highligthed text I ususlly snapped out of it and have to
read the page couple of times to get it in,
I recomment putting the subject into something you can relate
to, I have visual memory and can remember the layout but not
the substance..... so I try to make the subject more visual so I
grasp it.
But only if I can get myself to sit down.

little bit overdoing it
but I knew the subject (problem I only did with subject I liked)
anyway I got through hell
high school, collage both now in university of art and design
and trying to cope with school though it more ADD friendly than
the othersI've going through the message board and there are other
threads that have good comments and advice...... if you have in
the mood for a tresure hunt
