Mid Year "Med Check"? | ADHD Information

My doc writes out 3 individual month long prescriptions but post dates them
with a note "do not fill before X date". Maybe your doc could try that? Our ARNP does the same thing with dates on the prescriptions.   Depending on how things are going,  we see her every 2-3 months.  They do the usual height/weight and blood pressure - both laying down and standing. you all ae lucky my doc will only write rx for 1 month with a 2 month med check inbetween they mail the rx in between. My Ds 11.5 is on 3 different meds and the cost is staggering because there is no generic for years now. Med checks are normal and we do not get blood pressure checks although with the new Intuniv that might change. Good luck to all. Happy Easter and happy Pesach.I have the same thing on my Pain Meds , I get 1 month and 1 post dated one and see them every 2 months., but this psych refuses to write more than 1 month at a time believe me I have tried everything and he is not close to our house so it is definatly a pain to run out there now 2x's in 2 weeks to do a med check. He will write for refills on the non restricted meds no problem but refuses to post date any of the others. kinda a jerk that way.I was told by both my own doctor and my son's ped. that they must see you at least every 6 months if they are prescribing a controlled substance. We also go in every three months for a check. I really appreciate it because it makes me feel more secure that the meds are doing only their job and not anything else! We've had to go in every 3 months on every medication we've tried (including Adderall).  It's a pain when things haven't changed but I think it's responsible for the docs to require it! Hi, I'm new here and just wanted to ask a quick question.

I called to get my son's Rx (we get three months at a time) and the doctor's office would only give the Rx after we went in for a "mid year med check".  They basically take my son's blood pressure to make sure it's not elevated before they'll write another Rx.  We switched from Adderall to Focalin last fall and I'm wondering if any of you have had to do this while your child is on Focalin (because we didn't have to when my son was taking Adderall).  I'm curious as to whether this is standard or my doctor's office just wanting us to come in for an additional visit.

Thanks in advance!
Yep - definitely kids need meds checks. Among the things doctors want to
monitor is their weight - some meds kill kids appetites and they lose weight
or fail to gain at a good pace. Blood pressure and heart rate also has to be
monitored - my son's heart rate went too high on his current medication so
his dosage was lowered.

Personally I wouldn't take my son to a doctor who didn't insist upon regular
monitoring. These drugs are effective and necessary - and powerful, and
they have side effects that if they are not kept in check can have negative
effects on the children.
I usually get three Rxes at a time, with two post dated.  I've just never had to go in to do a "med check".  You've all reassured me that it's normal!  Like I said, we didn't have to go in for a mid year check the first year we did meds, but changed to Focalin in the fall las year. Before that, we only havd to go once a year.  Sounds like that is not the norm, from what I've read here.

Now that I'm thinking about it, we really should have done a med check on the Adderall.  My son lost a substantial amount of weight (part of the reason we changed to the Focalin).  The doctor was actually pretty alarmed when she realized how much my son had lost.  Luckily, things seem to be much better on his current med.

Thanks for the answers.  It's very helpful!
