What has helped with social anxiety? | ADHD Information
I've asked for a lot of advice here so you might know that my 8 yr old
daughter was having irrability which lead to these "jiggly" feelings as she
would describe it. We started seeing a social worker who changed
morning/bedtime routine and I started giving her Vaxa Attend along with
the fish oil supplements she already takes. Thank goodness, these
episodes of tantrums and asking for help because she feels so yucky have
gone away! However, she still has a big problem. In crowds, like with my
husbands large family at family gatherings, she becomes a mess. The
social worker had mentioned social anxiety and after reading about it this
is what she has. She wants to participate and play with her cousins so
very badly, but gets embarrassed sooo easily and reads into their every
action as them not liking her. In children, a website said they get clingy,
cry and tantrum with social anxiety and this is her. Has anyone used
therapy for their child with social anxiety and found success with it?My son has used play therapy for social situations. And - as I'm sure
you've read - we use the program described in The Explosive Child for all
social situations. In a nutshell, it says to have the child describe what
they're afraid of (it might be something you never thought of and could
easily fix) and also to describe what you're feeling to the child can relate
better.
I wish I could be more help. My son's issues don't align with your
daughter's - he tends to be impulsive when he's nervous and then feels
bad about it later, but doesn't reflect while it's happening.
Modeling and practicing social interactions helps a lot.
And also, I wanted to point out, that although they're young, it could be
"mean girl" syndrome rearing it's head. There was definitely one in my
son's class, age 7, last year. She was a horror! It could be that your
daughter's instincts are better than you think.
