Thanks for your nice posts Corrina and Logan's mom. You know, it's funny, when we first realized Kendal wasn't going to be "like the other kids" I went through a period of feeling sorry for myself and asking "why me". But now I look at things so differently. Those great moments you mentioned Logan's Mom, are the things most parents take for granted. To be able to appreciate every accomplishment, to be able to beam with pride at the smallest things, to be able to love so much it brings tears to your eyes.... these are the gifts ADHD has brought to me. Without the struggles we have been through and will continue to go through, I never would have been able to appreciate all these "great moments" the way I do.I'm soooo happy to hear that things are going so well!  What a relief huh?  Congrats and I truly hope the great moments keep coming for him!

I was so anxious about our little league opening day this weekend since last year was such a disaster. Now that our son is on meds, we decided to give it another try, and I'm so happy we did! Memories of having to run across the field during the games last year to retrieve him as he wandered towards the woods were fresh in my mind. But I am so glad to report that because he is now able to focus so much better, he stayed put at whatever position the coach put him, and he hit the ball every time at bat with pitches, not even having to use the tee once! No, our little guy will probably never be on the varsity team, but that's the furthest thing from my thoughts. I am just so very thankful that he now has a chance to be able to participate in the everyday things that I used to think would be impossible. I am just so proud, and had to brag.......I know every one of you must feel the same way each time your precious child manages to overcome their next challenge.

Kathleen051540279.9081134259That's so awesome! Congratulations to your fabulous son!

Kathleen,

Congrats on success with T ball.  I am so happy for your son.  It reminds me of  my dd when she played softball last Spring before we started medicine.  She was always picking at grass instead of watching for the ball.  Also when they practiced she would be so aggressive and instead of playing catch whe would try to throw the ball right at the girl.  The coach even talked to us.  When she started her meds it was amazing the improvement.  The coach told me it was like a whole new person was out there.

My dd currently is in gymnastics and got moved up to the next level.  It is wonderful to see their self confidence improve.

Kathleen,
So happy to hear this great news! Also, thanks for your support regarding
my son and his Focalin XR. Sadly, the teacher reported today not seeing any
benefits of the med, after a spring break where we thought he did so great...
it's a bummer. Is your son on 5mg or 10 mg? How old and how much does
he weigh? Thinking we may need to make increase based on her reports, but
will see how week goes. Please let me know...
thanks!

Thanks Andrea, yes, we are so proud! And how is Matt doing?

Mommatrying, it's surreal how similar so many of our experiences are. We started Kendal on 5 mg. of the focalin xr over Christmas break and we were thrilled with the difference we saw in his behavior. I couldn't wait to hear the great reports from the teacher when he went back to school. Well, the report was the same one you got...she could see no difference, and I was heartbroken. The next day we upped it to 10 mg. (which is what his nurse practitioner had advised us to do) and that did the trick. Kendal was 6 on Jan. 19th, and weighs 49 lbs. I have come to the conclusion that 5mg. was enough when he was home because there were not many distractions. But a school setting is a different story and the need to focus is much greater, therefore the 5 mg. was not enough. This is the same reason we don't give him the 10 mg when he is not in school. It seems to be a little bit strong when his senses are not being overloaded.

Don't get discouraged, it definitely takes a little playing around with the dosage and timing, but hang in there and I am sure you will figure out what works best for your son. Please feel free to private message me if you have any more questions.
