The "hypnotized" behavior you described is called hyperfocusing, and it is
very common for ADHD kids. So is the lovable attitude - one of the best
parts!

I'd say call the doctor about this medication. There are multiple classes of
drugs, and another might work much better for him. My son had a horrible
reaction to his first medication, but the second one has been fantastic for
him. Even if the doctor says that the medication is okay and that he's
having a normal reaction adjusting to it, you'll feel so much better hearing
that.

Hang in there. It will get better!

Thank you for your help, I will be calling him to make a change. I don't want to give him this anymore. It just breaks my heart to see him worse than he was and he doesn't even seem to know the difference. That Hyperfocusing thing he has done this thing with his hands ever sense he was a baby right before he starts to fall asleep he will reach for things and just gaze into to space.

Thank you again for you help

I have an ultrasound video of my son doing karate kicks at 14 weeks. I
should have considered it a warning about what was to come!

Hello,

I am new here and new to ADHD although we new somthing wasn't right with our Ds we adopted him when he was 16 mths and knew bm had issues with drugs ect. Our little guy is now 5 yrs and just diagnosed with ADHD after the preschool and sunday school where struggeling with him to stay focused or stay in his chair, not keeping his hands to himself, personal boundaries are a big thing for him. He loves everyone and just wants to hug and or kiss them and this is hard for us to teach him it is not appropriate behavior. He is a very happy and friendly little guy he is very smart and once he has met someone and learns there name he will not forget you or your name. He is intelligent but so busy he can't complete things. coloring is not an option for him anything that takes time and patience he just can't do. But he will watch Dora or Diego and almost me hypnotized by them. The pediatrician started him on 5 mg of focalin short term and the first day was awful and so scary. he has had tantrums before but nothing like these and the stuttering and stammering and talking gibberish he didn't go to sleep until after 10:00 and he is usually asleep by 8:30 it terrified me. My husband thought it was just the first day so we tried it again the next day and it was totally different it was like amazing he was calm and controlled he seemed like a different child and this gave us hope we even went out to a restaurant and he did very well. The third day we didn't really see a lot of difference from his normally busy behavior. Today was awful I gave him his pill and he seemed to be doing ok for about an hour but then we had a play date at the local McDonald's and it was totally scary he was so out of control I wanted to cry i felt so bad for him I just wanted to hold him and make it stop but he would have no part of anyone touching him and he had one melt down after another you could not reason with him or anything. We left shortly after that and came home that was about 3 hours ago and he is just now calming back down. I don't want him to have to go through that again. I am sorry for rambling on I just would appreciate any opinions on this focalin drug or if anyone else has see this pattern of behaviors where it is good one day and bad the next. I know when he is home with just my husband and I he is pretty good but when he has to go where there is more than a few people or a lot of stuff going on he just can't deal with it and is like out of control there I go again I just don't know where to turn.  Thank you for your forum I have read a lot on here and don't feel so alone.
