all he wants to do is draw... | ADHD Information

It sounds to me like they hit the nail on the head, he just discovered his talent and love of art and he wants to explore it more. I can relate to that. Once you start doing something, realize how much you love it, its all you want to do.
Good for him for getting praise for a great job!!!

I wonder if maybe he's just discovered that he loves to draw now that he has the ability to focus on it for more than a short time?  It could just be the novelty of the experience that is the reason for his interest- or you could have a budding Picasso on you hands.

As long as he's still interacting with others while he's drawing I wouldn't worry too much, but if he's totally shutting everyone else out you might want to talk to his doctor.

I don't know if this is helpful or related, but my son loves coloring books with patterns-mosaics and the like.  We have found that something in the patterns helps to calm his mind. When he has his "colors" as we call them, he can concentrate on other things-like reading.  He has even been allowed to color in school-this way his mind is still and he can focus on what the teacher is saying.  Without his colors, he is distracted in class. He colors when I read to him at bedtime.  If I read to him without colors, he can't remember what we read 5 minutes later. With colors, he is engaged, asks questions and remembers. The only thing that I can figure is that the patterns help to organize the chaos in his mind and keep it occupied, allowing him to concentrate with the rest of his brain.  It is just a theory, but as I say, for him it has made a big enough difference that he is allowed his colors in school.  He sits nicely for story time, doesn't interrupt or bug the other kids.

Just a thought, why don't you ask your son how his drawings make him feel?

Thanks for the replies, and yes I will ask him how it makes him feel, although I think I know the answer to that.  Today in school the teacher called attention to his drawing for how good it was, in fact had him go to the office to show the principal.  He is so proud!!  It's really great to see him enjoying school so much now.

It also makes total sense that now he can concentrate long enough to do this where he couldn't before.  I used to worry that he had no interest in drawing or crafts at all, he liked to paint but all he did was mix all the paints with his hands until it was just brown, then smear it around.  Funny, I need to look at the positive more!

Willa

dear willa..

i started meds three weeks ago.. and i started to notice that my son draws more than he used to.. but the problem that he draws the same theme.. the Pirates , Ships.. Fishes..

sometimes i ask him to draw something else.. but he insists on the pirates theme.. sometimes i get fed up and don't allow him to draw any more!!

i don't think it is a problem for you .. as long as he might express his feelings.. or what he wants to say by drawings..

i think it is better to encourage him to keep it up!!

good luck..
