My daughter was recently diagnosed with ADD. She is currently trying strattara and so far its working ok. Both my sisters boys were on Concerta and my sister told me not to put my daughter on it because both my nephews had horrible suicidal thoughts and was very mean. Ive herd a ton of horrible stuff about concerta but also good stuff. I really think it all depends on the child. I hope my child works well with the medicaid they have her on now but we will see.
Just a thought here. My son doesn't tolerate stims so it can't be related to that, but if there is such a disorder called "act on impulse" then he has it!!! I thought that impulsiveness was a part of ADHD (or at least common). Perhaps with some kids this is aggravated by the meds.
What I do know is that different meds work for different kids. I wouldn't want you to miss out on the "perfect fit" because of another child's reaction. My son hasn't been able to handle any stims, but I still tell other parents to give them a shot. We've even gone back and tried them again recently, just in case the tenex was helping enough that the side-effects would be lessened (he has some sensory/anxiety issues).
I read on another thread that personality changes are a big no-no. If your son isn't having personality changes, then chances are that concerta b works for him! The brain is a tricky beast. If you've found something that works, don't give up because of another child's issues with the same med. Now, if your son starts to act oddly, have strange new behaviors, or suicidal thoughts...definitely talk to your doctor about tapering down/dropping the meds.
And welcome, this is a great board for all your questions. There are so many others here going through the same things with the same concerns. I have an important questions concerning vyvanse versus concerta b. My seven year old son is taking concerta b.
My friend has mentioned that she had a family member on concerta b who exhibited a disorder called "act on impulse" which caused him to act without thinking. She says he is now on vyvanse and is doing much better.
Can anyone comment on this? Thanks.
