Im with you on that. What were going to do is Swim lessons in the am. dd doesn't get up till ten. Then lunch at park and go hme for nap. Shes ten but she gets tired. Then at 4 go back to pool for swim team for my other daughters for an hr. Then home for dinner, shower, reading, bed and a glass of wine for me. lol. It looks so good when i just typed it. Im home this summer with 3 girls ( only 1 has adhd) Shes going to take karate on Fridays and my mother is going to get dressed up like Emily Post ( the manners lady) and try and teach everyone the proper way to eat at tea parties, out in public, when were at the beach. Were going to make a big deal about my getting dressed for the part. And thats on Sats.

The one thing I thought of was when making schedule is that i wanted it structured. I didn't want one activity to take place 2 days a wk and then another 3 days a wk. I wanted to be able to say its tuesdays what are we doing today? And dd could just answer it without much thought in to it. And then it would cut out alot of questions and her wondering what the day would be like. If I wasn't structured it would be horrible for everyone here at home. And the are other kids like it too.

Are you located in Florida. I have aton of info on free stuff to do there.

good luck

Just wondering what activities you have found that work well for summer?  I don't want to overschedule Matt but yet, he still needs somewhat of a "routine".  We will do summer camp 9am-12pm for two weeks and that's about all I have lined up.  Neighborhood pool in the afternoons when possible.........but is that enough?  I feel like sometimes the less structure the more behavior problems we have.

He's been home for the past 2 days due to a stomach bug and by this afternoon (feeling much better) was on my last nerve.  I'm a little nervous since this gave me a glimpse of how LONG and difficult the days can be when he is home all day.

Any ideas welcomed!!

Matt age 8  - Focalin 10mg

As a homeschool mom....we "do math" during the summer.  I usually mix it up with something like Aleks.com..  My DS is obsessed with this online math and is working about 3 years ahead of his grade.

I agree an unstructure day is horrible...we make regular (same day every week) to the library, ice cream shop :-), , etc.  I use a large visual calendar that he can look at and know what is on the day's schedule.  Add everything physical... Kick to Fit (DVD), gardening, yard work, swimming.  His dad is scheduling a regular fishing afternoon and we are both teaching him to cook.  Get out the art supplies...our son is not crafty..but loves the one on one.

Hope you have a great summer!

Hi Andrea,

Have you checked out your local library? I know the one we have in our town has a very good summer schedule with all types of learning and fun activities going on. Another thought, does Matt have any kids in his class that you could contact their parents before school ends and set up regular play dates? I've sent in notes to school and had the teacher put them in the kids book bag so the parents could call... I might get one response for every 4 or 5 notes, but it's worth it! And what about a high school kid in your neighborhood, could you maybe hire one for a scheduled hour or two a week (you need a break too!). Also, I know our town's department of parks and recreation has tons of summer activites available... summer soccer, arts and crafts, science fairs, cooking classes for kids, etc. and they are very inexpensive, so you might want to check out what your town offers. I also agree with psbm15 that it's important to keep the schedule very structured, so you could have Matt help you with a calendar and post it at the beginning of each week so he knows what he has to look forward to.

I am signing up my ds (adhd/anxiety and 10 yr. this summer) for weekly
camps for most of the summer with his sister (not adhd). He needs
structure as do my other dd (non adhd). I want the kids to experience stuff
that they don't get to normally throughout the school year. Two weeks of
and ECO camp (9am-4pm). They will do hikes, canoe, other outdoor stuff.
Also, a theater camp, british soccer camp, etc. Not every week is filled as we
will go to the pool or they can take golf lessons. I just can't stay home with
3 kids under 10 yr. old. They want/need to be around other kids and being
active. We will also continue with Kumon (math/reading) and Judo lessons.
It keeps us all busy. We also try to do the free library reading program
and/or Barnes & Noble's one where you can get free books. I like the idea of
a previous poster about the big visual calendar. My kids would love that.
