Welcome to the board, I think you will find alot of company here! Yes, I can relate to the speech delay. Our son was 6 in January and has had speech therapy for 4 years now. He didn't speak at all till he was 3. His vocabulary his that of a "little professor" now, however his pronunciation is still behind. He was diagnosed at the age of 3 with pdd nos, and with ADHD at the age of 4 1/2. He started taking medication for his ADHD this past December because he couldn't make it through a full day kindergarten without alot of disruption. He's doing better with the meds, but still has his quirky behavior.
As for the social immaturity, that is very common with ADHD. We experience that here, and I read about it over and over again on the boards. We have our son in behavior therapy through the school and they work on his social skills with him. He doesn't really get the idea of personal space, has trouble keeping his hands to himself (not in an agressive way, but always wants to hold hands or touch the other kids), dominates conversations, and other awkward social behaviors. According to his therapist, alot of these behaviors can be attributed to this pdd nos and that is why the stimulant he is taking for his ADHD does not help in these areas.
Is your son on medicine or other type of intervention? Does his get any social skills training? Hope you benefit from the wealth of knowledge on these boards, as I did! It really helps to know we are not alone!
Hi, my 6 year old has been diagnosed with adhd. The things I am mostI have heard that it's not uncommon for kids with ADHD to have sloppy handwriting, I know our son sure does! When he started the medicine his handwriting improved quite a bit. As for reading, I think that's an individual thing, not related to the ADHD. As for therapies, besides speech, we use the services of a behavioral interventionist at school. He comes to our home once a week after school and twice a week in the summer and picks our son up. They go out to public places - library, park, pool, etc. and he works on social skills with him. There's also "friendship" groups that meet with the guidance counselor in school which he is a part of. It's for kids that might have difficulty making or keeping friends. I'm sure there's many other types of therapy, and you'll probably get alot of suggestions from parents on this board.
