Anger and Intuniv | ADHD Information

Share
Hi,
My son has been on Intuniv since April.  He is currently on 3mg and is nine years old.  It seems to be helping somewhat with his focusing in school because his grades have gone up.  I have noticed more moodiness...he was moody before but he's completely acting out more, having tantrums, destroying things..namely anything that belongs to his 4yr old sister! I'm losing my mind!
When we went for his med check we mentioned this to his pediatrician and he referred us to go to counselling or to follow up with a psych.  Any one else having this problem and have any advice?
Thanks so much!!

MY daughter takes tenex (the short acting form).  When her dosage was too high,  she was moodier and more agitated.   Lowering it back down resolved the problem for us.

If these issues are new since starting the Intuniv,  I sounds like a side effect from the mediation.  I'd go back to the doctor and discuss lowering the dosage and/or trying something different.

I had to remove my daughter from tenex for anger issues.  It is a less common reaction, as so many take tenex for the calming effects.  The doctors didn't get it, but when I removed it my nice kid came back.  I had to look for new solutions for the ADHD symptoms.

I am so glad I found this post..I thought I was going crazy!  My son currently takes 3 mg of intuniv and is so moody and angry all the time. He was on tenex and I saw some moodiness but nothing like this.  The problem is he was moody on 2 mg also and he needs something to help with his tourettes.  He also takes 45 mg of concerta for ADHD.  I told the dr. about the moodiness and she was like that is not a side effect he just must be going through puberty...which he is..but by bedtime (9:00 p.m) he is back to his old self.  He takes the intuniv around 7:00 a.m.

I think I'll have to take him off and try something else for the tics.

My DD, 10 has tried the Intuniv.  1 mg didn't really do anything.  It was as if she had no meds at all.  When we went up to 2 mg, she was so sleepy and kind of out of it.  She was grouchy and had this kind of "glazed over" look in her eyes.  This did not wear off, even after a couple weeks.  So we had to take her off of it and are back on the Focalin.  This works ok for us.  It just causes a lot of nervousness and anxiety.  Strattera didn't work.  She used to be on Concerta, but has not been for a very long time.  We go back to the doctor next week.  I am not sure what he will do.  The Focalin works great if we could just get something to counteract the anxiety, which I believe is caused by the Focalin.   I know the sleepiness caused by Intuniv wears off with some kids, but it did not with my daughter.  Wish I could be more positive about it.  Maybe it will help your son.  I hope so!! My 10 yr old started 1 mg Intuniv 5 days ago and already wants off of it.  He is falling asleep in the afternoons and very emotional and angry.  We tried Focalin...emotional mess.  Then Strattera, which was great until he developed tics.  This is our third try and it's not looking good.  Stimulants bring out latent tic disorders so there are not that many options for ADHD combined with tic disorder.  Does the anger/sleepiness get better when you ramp up to 2 mg?  At this point we are hesitant to take the next step, but if it's a "settling in" issue, then we can be patient. soworried40366.3797569444My son is 13 and he is in a residential facility right now.  They started him on intuiv about 3 weeks ago and this past Saturday they added the daytrana patch.  He also has mood disorder and is taking geidon and depokote.  I just wasn't sure why or if it was good for him to be on these combo of  meds.  He was on tegratol for the past three months and was up to taking 1000 mg daily, it made him very agreessive and irritable.  The depakote seems to be helping, but the adhd meds seem to just make him very aggitated.  He has been in treatment for 6 weeks and I am soo ready for him to come home.  But, it is very frustrating for me to try all these medications and not one seems to work that well.  And, I don't know how much these doctors really know. Just needed to vent I guess, thanks!

We had to stopped Intuniv for my DS, age 11, because he became very irritable, aggressive, moody, basically very unpleasant.  He does great on Tenex, but not Intuniv.

Omg I'm seeing the exact thing too. We moved from one mg to 2 and
needed a slight adjustment but he went to four. She went really
downhill however I attributed it to kids picking at school and family
stress about finances but shes always been very self confident and
now she's in an awful hole I think I need to go down to three and see
I'm going to discuss today when I call her physician I'm worried about
the poor girl. Age 15 is hard enough was hoping this would help her
vyvanse but I think skipping up so high is hurting her. Omg I'm seeing the exact thing too. We moved from one mg to 2 and
