Once you get up to a high enough dose, you should see results within 1/2 hr or so.  Sometimes the docs start at a very small dose and work up to the target dose over a week or two.  So you may not see any results with the first dose. 

The main side effect you might see is loss of appetite.  The appetite comes back after the meds wear off.  Sometimes it can be upsetting when your child is not eating but they usually eat enough before the meds kick in and after they wear off to be just fine.  Many times the appetite comes back almost completely after a month or so.

Watch for "rebound" when the meds wear off. (Oh, and by the way, they NEVER last as long as they're supposed to last!) Sometimes when the meds wear off the symptoms come back worse. My son got REALLY emotional and inconsolable. Rebound can be helped and you shouldn't have to put up with it.  It can usually be fixed by a dose or timing adjustment or a swich to a different med.

Good luck on your journey and just keep in mind that just because one med doesn't work, it doesn't mean you'll have the same problems with others!  Hang in there!

Logan'sMom40330.745474537there can be any number of side effects (you can google the specific kind of medication and get that information).  These side effects can stay or disappear.  You should see a change immediately.  That's the nature of stimulants.  And when the medication is worn off, the symptoms typically reappear.  The best person to ask about side effects and long term effects is your doctor because they will know your child better than we do. :) 

Also, keep in mind that medication is NOT A CURE.  It is simply an AID to help people gain a little bit of control so that they can do the real work of behavior modification.  Without the behavior modification, an individual could potentially be on medication for a very long time.
