Getting children to take tablets | ADHD Information

Share

Our 4 year old son has just been diagnosed with ADHD and co-morbid ODD.  The doctor has prescribed Strattera.

We are finding it impossible for him to take tablets.  The ittle guy gags each time and is sick.  We've tried lots of different approaches and are now becoming desperate.

Does anybody have any advice for us please?

Are there any drugs that can be split and added to water for instance?

Thanks in advance.

My son takes a tablet that is a little too big for him to swallow. It's funny because his pill seems tiny to me, but it's still too big for his gag-reflex. I have a pill cutter and I cut it into four pieces and put each one into a spoonful of applesauce and he swallows them down one at a time. The other thing I've done in the past was crush his pill and mix it with applesauce, but that was actually harder for him. I don't think you are supposed to break apart some meds, so I'd ask the dr. first.

We tried Straterra for few months and I remember it was a capsule. If the doc says not to sprinkle it on anything, then I'd agree with Logan's mom and try putting it into something slick/slimy to be swallowed whole. It took about three weeks before my son could easily take his meds without a fuss. Now he hardly even notices and rarely complains or refuses to take it. But it was definitely a battle at first.

Hope you've figured out a solution by now, but I thought I'd add my opinion in case you were still struggling.

It sounds like he's taking a tablet right?  My son takes Strattera and it's a capsule.  Maybe you could get the capsule and open it to spinkle it on applesause or pudding.  I don't know if you can do that with Strattera but we did that with Adderall before my son could take pills.

If he has to take the tablet how small is it?  When my son had to take a tablet, it was small enough that we could put it in the middle of a very small piece of canned peach and he would swallow it right down.  Just a thought...
