I think it is a great idea. I just don't know if my child would participate. He is so wrapped up in xbox live and socializes there. It is a great escape from all the "stuff" that he deals with when at school, etc. Kids accept him and he is happy as well as content.
I wish I lived in the cleveland area because I would meet you for coffee. If you ever make it to Boston, give me a shout.
I remember us once chatting on the boards of us all getting together and taking a cruise. I don't know if Longsally started the thread but it sure sounded great.
No doubt...a cruise would be great!!
To be honest, I'm not sure how my son would feel about it either. My thought was that they'd benefit from others talking about taking meds, friend issues, home issues, etc. Our neighbor's son is now out of high school (a lovely family) and the mom said she had a rough time with him and his ADHD. I swear, you'd never know it looking at him today. Just a together, great, successful guy. It gives me so much hope, and I keep threatening her that I'm coming over with a glass of wine so she can share with me all her pearls of wisdom. Then it occured to me how great it would be if her son could talk to mine. I don't know about you, but I find it difficult to talk to my son about his ADHD....I'm so afraid of making him feel like he's sick or abnormal. I find it difficult to find the right words to help him understand what's going on, why he takes the meds, etc.
BTW, after we returned from vaca I spoke with our ped and we're upping his concerta today. He will see this new psych in 2 weeks (after we meet him next week) and we'll discuss the possibility of tenex added. Our ped wanted to take it one med at a time, which I appreciate, but agreed he may benefit. Plus she wants another EKG. Will let you know he we do...thank you for your suggestion of Tenex. Many others discussed it on these boards, so it's just one more reason these boards are helping tremendously. I'm glad I happened upon it!
What are you upping the concerta to?
For MY son, tenex (guanfacine - same thing) go hand in hand. One doesn't work well without the other, again, for my son.
Let me know how you son makes out on his dose increase.
He was on 36 mg. so I'm not sure what the next dosage up is. I'm picking the Rx up today. Our ped wants the updated EKG before the tenex, so if we need it before he meets with psych, we'll go ahead with it and get the tenex. But yes, she said the two would be taken together. Given that he will see the psych in 2 weeks, there's a possibility that he may tweek the meds too. So we're taking it one careful step at a time. Will let you know.I remember the med increase all too well. It really was what we did with our son when he was in second grade. It took us at least 6 months to level off. Then we stayed there for at least a year.
He was on 54 mgs in 2nd grade. he then went to 72mgs the next year and stayed there until the end of 5th grade where we went to 90mgs.
Currently DS is on 104mgs. He turned 13 on sunday. He is also on 1 mg of guanfacine, which has never changed. He is allowed a second dose of the 1 mg in the pm if necessary.
