I'm posting a question every day now. My 9 yo daughter started Adderal XR 5 mg a week ago. We saw some improvement - but some frustration as the week wore on. Increased it to 10 mg yesterday on doctor's advice. She seemed very excitable and superbusy, talkative etc. yesterday. And, seems to be going down that road today.
Does this side effect wear off, or, is this a sign that this isn't the right medicine? She was probably a touch less frustrated, but, was over the top with excitability. I just can't seem to wrap my mind around how this is supposed to go.
Any advice will help. Please...
Just checking for a reply...anyone have any thoughts? Help please!!My son (7) is on adderall xr, 10 mg. The first couple of days he talked NON STOP. In fact the meds still make him talk more. I see it as a good thing. He can now formulate his thoughts and get words out. Before he just fluttered about or said nonsense type stuff. He never experienced increased exciteability though. Sorry, I can't speak to that.
Finding the right med and dose is so hard on us parents. I am going through something similar right now regarding increasing the dose. I wish things were easier. Hang in there.
A little late reply, but I have been on Adderall for 7 years now. When you first take Adderall (as in, every time you take it, within the first few hours of it kicking in) it gives a very mild euphoria which acts as a great motivator. If I'm not at work, it makes me want to find things to do, which, if I'm sitting in a car or at breakfast/lunch with someone, makes me into a chatty Cathy. Its normal! I have been on a steady 30mg XR dose for all 7 years, even though it's an extended release the effects are stronger in the morning when you take it (probably because your body is going through subtle withdrawal when you wake up in the morning from yesterday's dose). Is she still having the emotional outbursts? If she is, start noting the time they occur. Not so much the time of day but the amount of time since the last dose of Adderall. That may give you an indication of whether it's the medication wearing off too quickly and she's having "rebound", if it's just the medication overall, or if it finally smooths out...
Adderall XR has two different "granules" inside. One type disolves right away and is supposed to last 6 hours and then the 2nd granule disolves at this time to cover the last 6 hours. My son metabolized the medication soooo fast that the first granules were wearing off at about 3 hrs and then had nothing until the 2nd granules disolved hours later. The result was horrible rebound right in the middle! Just something to consider. Best of luck!
Oh, and you're very welcome!
Please keep us posted!

My daughter has been doing better overall on the Adderal. But, she had an outburst today - yelling, hitting, scratching. She's calm now in her room. We've had her in therapy and talked about anger etc. We're trying to incorprate all areas to work on this.
She was a playing a game on her DS and was EXTREMELY frustrated before the outburst. That was definitely the trigger, although, she was irritable before playing the game.
Any thoughts on this. I expect to still work on behaviors and anger/frustration etc. I was just hoping that the outbursts were a thing of the past. Does this seem like a signal that this medication isn't the one to go with OR is it just one of those things that we need to accept and continue our work? PLEASE PLEASE HELP ME ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
my son was on adderal and showed a downhill improvment and then he became aggresive which our doctor said was a side effect of the medication
