Adult with Concerta problems

Seems to me you've given Concerta plenty of time to show it's stuff to you, so if you're still getting not real benefit from taking it, telling your doc this and asking to trial another med  seems quite logical.

"Do all the stimulants work the same way?"  Not exactly when talking about how they work (some stims affect primarily one neurotransmitter, others a couple, etc.).  When talking about the effect felt by the person taking the stim, that varies with each individual.  Moreover, taking the exact same dose of the same stimulant med made by different manufacturers (as is possible when prescribed generic versions) a person may experience noticeable differences in effectiveness.

"Will the Concerta eventually start working correctly?"  I've never taken Concerta so have no personal experience to share.  It appears that Concerta's effects, as with all the stims  as far as I know, start acting immediately and their effects are felt immediately (well, withing an hour of taking it).  My guess is that if dose prescribed has not started "working" for you,  it ain't gonna!  Time to either up the dose or try another med.  Good Luck!

John D:

Thanks so much for replying to my message. I think I will ask the doc to let me try another of the long-acting stimulants to see if it might work better. Ritalin XR, or Adderal XR, or Focalin.

If that doesn't work, I may just have to do my best with the non-med remedies, though I feel like I've already had decades of failure with those.

I'm a male, 50 yrs. old. After 9 weeks trying Strattera, with no effect, good or bad, whatsoever, My psychiatrist agreed to start me on a gradual-release stimulant medication. I was willing to do this because my work situation demands that I do something to concentrate better and forget less. She chose Concerta.
Started on a dose of 18mg for 3 days, 36mg for three more, and then an increase to 44mg from then on. The idea was to increase the dose till I felt at "80-100%."
Well, eighty percent of what? I certainly have more energy (rises and drops dramatically through the day), occasionally more concentration, but mostly just feel...strange. Speedy (and I know what that feels like) and kind of heavy-lidded at the same time. And no less forgetful, jumpy, talkative, inattentive, as before. I also feel antisocial.
I have stayed at the 36mg level for over a week now, fearing an increase in uneasiness with the higher dose. My psychiatrist is attributing this to anxiety, but I feel like the pill is creating its own anxiety. Today, I took the higher dose. I just feel weird.
I'm extremely discouraged right now, feeling that everything I've tried isn't working. I know there's no "magic pill" for anything, but if the stimulants don't work, what else will. I'm already doing meditation every day.
My question: Should I ask for another medication? Do all the stimulants work the same way? Will the Concerta eventually start working correctly?
PS: I've been on the medication for 13 days now.
