Corrina,
Thank you for your book suggestion....off to order it now!
This morning DS (age 7) wanted to wear the paper hat he got from a Japanese restaurant to his summer daycare program. It is not a program for special needs kids at all, just a normal summer program for kids whose parents work. I said "no". Then he asked if he could wear his paper crown from Medieval Times. I said no, and reminded him that another girl in his class did that and hers ended up getting ripped apart. I told him he could wear a baseball hat. He goes into his room and comes out with the baseball hat and a strip of cloth to wear as a headband. I said he could not wear the strip of cloth headband. At that point, he had a major tantrum, which lasted until he got dropped off at daycare by Daddy. We tried counting and taking away a priviledge, which did not work.
Was I too strict in saying "no"? I am just worried that if he wears weird things to school he will be made fun of or they will get wrecked and he will be more upset. I also do not want him dragging stuff to school all the time.
Try reading The Explosive Child. It outlines a way of communicating that
