Vyvanse & Sleep Deprivation | ADHD Information
I have an 8 year old son who was diagnosed just under two years ago. We tried a few meds & eventually ended up on 30mg Vyvanse once a day. It definitely helps him to focus better and has made a difference both at school and at home. I am, however, noticing that the nightly battle for sleep continues to wage on and this is the only common denominator that his father & I (we are divorced) can come up with. As far as the routine for time, etc. that is very consistent - but we still have 2 hour windows from the time he goes to bed, until we finally get him to actually sleep. It's every excuse in the book, water, hungry, scared, whatever it takes... now he is even beginning to interrupt his 4 year old brothers sleep by waking him up when I am in the bath or bed. If you have any suggestions that may be worth trying - i am all ears! Thank you so much! Have you talked to his doctor about it? Sometimes moving the dose earlier can help. Also, you may want to try Melatonin. My son takes it right before bed (as recommend by his doc) and it makes him drowsy so he goes right to sleep. The also have sustained release Melatonin so if he also wakes up during the night it can help. Good luck!Ha, just read your post after I posted mine. Looks like we're having the same sort of problem...
We actually found that it worked better for us to let our son stay up just a bit later, that along with melatonin has really worked. He is also on Vyvanse. Now he's going to sleep with no issues again.
I have problems with insomnia myself, and I know that one of the worst things I can do is go to bed too early. I agree with the advice on no technology for a couple of hours before bed but I know for myself it's just too frustrating to lie in bed, awake. Obviously different things work for different people, good luck in finding what works for you!
My son has a long lead time too. I give him his medication and then have
him do his homework in bed - gives him something to do. I also read to
him, up to an hour a night. He's 9 and he "goes to bed" at 7. He usually
falls asleep sometime between 8 and 9. He does get melatonin.
I'd say, try the melatonin, and get him to bed earlier. Keep him away from
all technology - tv, computers, video games - for 2 hours before you want
him to sleep.
Good luck!
Melatonin save my sanity and my daughter's. I researched it and talked to 4 doctors and everyone ok'd it. Ask your doctor and get it today. The flavored sublingual tablets are easy to take. The orange taste like certs. My daughter likes the peppermint. My daughter only uses 1 mg. 1/2 hour before bed with some quiet time and she goes right to sleep.
