getting to sleep | ADHD Information

Our son has always had trouble getting to sleep, even from infancy... once he gets to sleep though, he's usually fine through the night.  We recently tried Melatonin and had great success with it for about a month or so.  Now it doesn't do a thing and we used the maximum recommended.  In fact, we've just given up on giving it at all.  Do any of you have suggestions as to how to help a child with ADHD get to sleep at a decent hour?  thanks!! This is what has worked for us best:  During the school year I read aloud to my daughter 45 minutes before bedtime while she relaxed on the sofa (we can't be in her bedroom and TV had to be off).  Luckily I like to read, because 45 minutes of me reading was a long time.  Then, we went up to her bed and I massaged her, telling her - relax your toes, your toes are being massaged, your toes are relaxed.  I eventually massaged her whole body, ending at her temples.  I continued to lay with her until she fell asleep.  Also, we actually had her go to bed a bit later, so she was getting about 9hr 45 minutes sleep each night.  This was less sleep than what we wanted, but a later bedtime did seem to help.

I did revert to melatonin this summer because our bedtimes were all over the place, but I must say that last school year this technique really helped her fall asleep.  It is about a 1 hour ordeal to get her to sleep, but if that's what works...
