Risperdal | ADHD Information
Hello All! We're considering adding this medication for our six year old son- he's already on Vyvansse, Adderall and Luvox, but still has lots of symptoms. The dr. suggested this and I was just wondering if anyone out there had experience with it. Was it effective? How were the side effects?? Thanks in advance!I am researching this as well. My son is on concerta 36 and intuniv. I am wondering why your son is on vyvansse and adderall. I thought they were both stims. My son has FAS and is still so hyper he is having trouble with being too impulsive all the time. I have been fearful of antipsychotics so I was looking for some one with experience.
Our son was on Vyvansse for the first part of the day, but when it would wear off (usually around 3:00 or so), we would give Adderall IR to take him through the rest of the day. The doctor now has us just giving Adderall and dropping the Vyvansse... an Adderall ER in the morning and IR in the afternoon. He has just started Intuiv as well and is staying on the Luvox. He has been doing somewhat better already and I hope we keep seeing improvement in the coming days/weeks. As for the Risperdal, we aren't pursuing that anymore. So I guess I should read up on Luvox... What were the symptoms that led your Dr to Luvox?
It totally slowed my brain down. It was so nice to experience that for at least a little while.
My DD(15) is on Luvox CR for OCD. It is one of the "bigger" OCD meds, usually tried after Zoloft, Prozac, etc. My DD can't take a stim because she is a skin picker, and we have yet to find a stim that does not cause anxiety, even taken with Zoloft for two years. She is now on Luvox CR and it is working very well. I believe she will have to go up or two before she is where she needs to be, but she is better. She was taking Intuniv for about six months along with Zoloft, but I didn't notice any improvement in her inattentive ADD, and in fact saw more irritability and attitude, so I took her off. Once she is stable on the Luvox, we *may* try to add a small stim dose.
As a side note, I am on Klonipin for severe anxiety, and is working well, but if Risperdal didn't cause weight gain/blood sugar issues I would go back on it in a heartbeat. An old doc gave me a weeks worth to help me get into a good sleep pattern, and it worked so well. Best med I have ever taken to slow my brain.
Heather thanks for that info. My son is not OCD... but he does have some behaviors that almost seem that way. He searches through cupboards and drawers. I will go in the garage and every cupboard and drawer will be standing open. He says he is not looking for anything particular and the same stuff in in there as last week! Anyway the real problem is activity level and his brain bouncing from one thing to the next. He is beyond distracted....
His teachers say they cannot get his attention for more than a few seconds. He was alcohol exposed and FAS kids rarely gain much weight. He is very skinny! Very speedy! I wonder if risperdal would be right for him... I see his psychiatrist next week.
