IEP | ADHD Information
Hello, Does anyone know how an IEP works when your child switches to another school district? My ADHD/ODD/OCD son who is 10 has had a lot of behavior issues and has been suspended many times since kindergarden. 2 years ago he was taken out of the mainstream class and put in a special ed class with a maximum number of 10 kids with a teacher and aid. Since being moved there he is happy, working above his grade level and has not been in the office or in major trouble. The teacher is wonderful and is trained how to handle agressive and behavior problems of ADHD kids. I am planning on moving out of the school district at the end of this year and want very much for his current accomadations to follow. First I am unsure if all school districts have this program. Also I was wondering if an IEP transfers or if I have to start fresh with the new district? Does anyone out there have advice on this? It's supposed to transfer, and everything in the current IEP is supposed to
seamlessly flow into the new district.
I'd get a copy of your current IEP from your school. Go through it with a
fine toothed comb. If there's anything that's being done for your child
that isn't in the IEP, request a meeting and get it added. Tell them you're
planning to move and you need absolutely everything in the IEP so it will
transfer.
I haven't transferred myself. You could give the SPED dept in the new
district a call to see what their preferred method of receiving the IEP is. It
would definitely be better for you to already have a copy of the IEP at the
new district before the transfer, or as soon as possible afterward, so
there isn't a disruption of services.
Good luck!
Supposed to transfer along with all the other records from school.
I would call the special ed department and give them a heads up so that they are aware of it and leave them a number to call you so that when he starts school in the new district it is smooth. Maybe even have a team meeting prior to his first day.
