New and Help Needed :) | ADHD Information

Hey everyone :)

I'll give a little background info here since I skipped
everything introductory and went straight for the heavy
stuff :D

My ex-husband was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. I was
diagnosed at 17 (due largely in part to a neglectful
parent, looking back on how I was as a kid it's wonder
that it took that long lol). Our daughter was diagnosed
at 4. We tried to tough it out with therapy and diet but
had so much trouble in kindergarten that we basically had
no choice but to medicate. Realizing the hypocrisy of
medicating her but refusing to medicate myself when I
clearly needed it also led me to accepting medication as
well. I'm on 20mg of Adderall twice a day. I started on
10mg twice a day and it seemed okay for about a week.
Unfortunately that seems to be the same with the 20mg. I
have no side effects other than thirst and no benefit
other than I don't jiggle my leg as much. :/ But I'm
another story. This is about her. (I do jump around a
lot, please be patient and bear with me). Oh, I should
probably also know that she has anxiety (sadly, my genes
there) and has Aspergers TRAITS (no diagnosis, just
traits... her therapist basically just thinks that some
of the behavioral tools effective with Apsbergers could
benefit my daughter as well).

Soooo anyway, she wasn't able to swallow pills so she
started out on 1 dose of 10mg Medidate CD. I didn't
notice any difference at home. I think her kindergarten
teacher noticed enough of an improvement that she was
happy. That woman had the patience of a saint and I SO
miss her. The first grade teacher isn't nearly as
communicative or patient and my daughter ends up in the
principal's office a lot. Okay so the Metadate wasn't
working AND we really couldn't afford it because no
generic was offered. So, once she could swallow pills
her doctor switched her to 20mg of generic extended
release ritalin once a day. (Seriously her doctor has
issues with two doses a day. With the most recent change
(that I'll get to in a second) I had to practically yell
to get an afternoon dose). So the 20mg generic ritalin
is awful. It helps her focus, but she also acts out, is
extremely aggressive and combative, and is in general
just awful.

So we go back, the doctor sees the teachers report and
hears my stories from home and wants to give her Tenex
twice a day in addition to her Ritalin. I'd never heard
of it before and I think he could tell that I wasn't
really comfortable with it because I really knew NOTHING
about it so instead switched her to 5mg of short acting
generic adderall twice a day (once at 7:30am, once at
3pm. Which seems a little stupid to me because there is
NO WAY that's gonna last through school and we NEED
something for homework). She hasn't started that yet
because we can't get it filled yet due to when the 20mg
generic ritalin was filled.

Of course I check out Tenex (we would be getting the
generic) as soon as I get home and it scares the holy
crap out of me. Besides the fact that it's blood
pressure medication (scary), I read that some pediatric
ADHD patients experienced mania and aggression and all of
those kids were found to have a genetic history of
bipolar disorder which my daughter has on both sides of
her family (her dad and my mother). So I'm really not
sure how I feel about that.

I think basically I'm just desperate for information. I
honestly don't know what's out there and what's been the
most beneficial (I know ritalin and adderall get
prescribed most often, but it's also been around the
longest so it's what people know so that could be why).
I do plan on sitting down this weekend and reading back
through the posts (well, hopefully.) but if anyone has
anything to offer here, I would be so incredibly
grateful.

I'm sorry for the book I wrote, but thank you in advance
for your help. (hehehe if you made it this far!)

Although it is a bit expensive (about 160 for a month supply), I would suggest you give Vyvanse a consideration.  My five year old son had been on Adderrall for about a year and switched to Vyvanse about four months ago.  The side effects are simmillar to adderall but much less severe and it is long acting (about a 11 hours)

This is just immedite advice I feel I can give you but I am looking into more holistic possiblities for my son at the same time.  Hope this helps

A lot of people have used Tenex (generic name is guanfacine) for ADHD.  My child took guanfacine for several years, and it was an enormous help.  He doesn't have any family history of bipolar disorder.  The Tenex helps with both ADHD and anxiety disorder.  My child has both ADHD and General Anxiety Disorder, and Tenex allowed us to lower the Zoloft dose as well as the stimulant dosage.

He's since switched to Intuniv, which is a 24-hour guanfacine.  This has been even better for him because he's more even and there's no wearing-off time.

My son actually had a manic/psychotic episode on Adderall and at first no one was equating it to the medication which meant he was very close to being hospitalized for his condition.  Luckily we did research and found that what he was experiencing was definitely a side effect of the medication and took him off of it.  After 3 days he was back to "normal."

If the medication you are considering putting your daughter on has that side effect, just be very careful with it.  I can tell you it is a very scary thing seeing your child experience something like that.

I've talked with someone else who also had a psychotic episode on the Adderall and has their child now taking Concerta which they are very pleased with.

We are going cold turkey without any medication as my son has had bad side effects to both medications he has tried (Strattera and Adderall) so we are just going the holistic route and praying we can get him through school.

Good luck.  I know it's not easy.

Thanks everyone :)

I'm not sure we could afford the Vyvanse, but when it comes down to it, if we're out of options and the expensive one works, I'll figure out a way.  It breaks my heart when my daughter tells me she just wants to be like the other kids.  Her happiness beats out pretty much anything else.

I have read a LOT of really good things about the Tenex.  If the adderall doesn't work that will probably be our next step.  I think I'm buying time with that to be honest because I'd really like to be able to be with her for a few days when we start it.  She goes back to the doctor on Nov. 18th so if the adderall hasn't worked, we can get the Tenex then and start her on the 25th because I get a 4 day weekend off work to monitor her.  I'm a lot less skeptical of it now than I was on Day 1 of my research.

I've been researching alternatives to medicaiton so we may try to go that way to.  Worst case scenario: nothing happens.  Best case: we end up with a lower dose of meds or none at all if we're REALLY lucky.  You can't really lose with those options :)

If you end up trying Tenex, be aware that it takes about three weeks to build up in your system and reach optimal effectiveness.  You need to be patient, which of course is hard.

Our DS has severe ADHD & Tourettes Combo...difficult with the aggression and defiance.  He is unable to use stimulants (due to tourettes), but is on Tenex.  The tenex does help "turn his dial down a notch".  It doesn't do anything for focus but seems to take the edge off of the defiance, aggression and general "hyperness".

As a word of caution, the combination of tenex and stimulants made him more aggressive and defiant.  But on this board there are many posters who have had success with the combo.  It does seem like a reasonable suggestion to try the Tenex...and it generally doesn't have near the side effects as stimulants and seems to reduce the stimulant side effects.

Good luck!

Thank you! I'll definitely know to look for that if we
end up with the Tenex. We probably will, but I'm still
holding out hope that she can do this on one medication.
I can't help but wonder if her problem isn't all the
hyperness and aggression. Of course she isn't going to
be able to pay attention when she's bouncing in her seat
and crawling around on the floor. We're doing adderall
next. If that doesn't, we're adding Tenex. If that's
successful, then that's great, but I wonder if just the
Tenex would work for her. I'll definitely be watching
after we start the Tenex (if LOL see? I'm so sure that
it's going to go that way that I'm using "WHEN"). If the
combination of the two does make it worse maybe we could
try just the Tenex.

Thanks everyone for all your help. I really appreciate
it. It's so frustrating for her and for me. My
exhusband, her father, is worthless. I try to keep him
in the loop but all I get from him is "kids are hyper,
she doesn't need medicine" and then turns around and says
that he doesn't have the patience to deal with her so
that's why he doesn't go to his parents house to see her
when she is there on Sundays. Really? She doesn't need
meds for a condition that is so bad it makes her own
father not want to see her? REALLY? Grrr.

Hello,

My son just turned 5 and was diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, and an Anxiety disorder. His pediatrician put him on the Daytrana patch for 9 hours. It has been a few weeks that he has been on it and I notice he is better in school and the bus but afterwards, right when it is about to take the patch off, he gets aggressive and verbally violent. I contacted the pediatrician wondering if it is due to the meds and she stated to take him off a week to see. We did and it really didnt help. So, she advised we see the psychiatrist to prescribe something else to also cope w/his adhd, ocd and anxiety. What I need is something that lasts day/night. The patch works perfectly because we call it his 'super hero patch" and pills he isnt going to be a fan of. Does not do well taking meds. i am going out of my mind with all of this. Just wondering if anyone had any experience w/the Daytrana patch.

Thank you!

Candybar, adding something else to the stimulant might help your child.  I think Intuniv isn't yet approved for under age 6, but that might be a good option for your child if a pill could be swallowed.  Intuniv helps with both ADHD and anxiety.  It helps more with the hyper and impulsive aspects of ADHD than focus.

If he's too young for Intuniv, then Tenex might be an option.  It's the same medication (guanfacine), but Intuniv is the 24-hour form and Tenex is more short-acting (I think 12 hours?).  There is no generic for Intuniv, but Tenex's generic is guanfacine.
