getting my son to take his medication | ADHD Information

Haven't tried it myself but...when we had this problem someone recommended that we hide the pill in a mandarin orange (from the can) because it can slide down.  Good luck!

I've heard of opening capsules and putting them in chocolate pudding, ice cream, and other goodies.

Tried everything except the Mandarin oranges. That will be my next one. He just chewed the m&ms, wouldn't just swallow. I asked his speech therapist to try, but she hasn't had any luck either. I ahve a really hard time every morning trying to get my 4 year old to take his strattera. He cannot swallow the pill. I have tried hiding it in everything we can think of. We open it and put it in chocolate milk, but it tastes gross and it is a battle. Any thoughts. This is ruining my mornings.

I have heard of putting it on peanut butter or in apple sauce.

Start teaching him to take a pill with M & Ms.  Worked for us.

My son takes Vyvanse and is not yet able to swallow pills.  I open it up and put it in his first bite of yogurt or applesauce.  I do not suggest you mix it in because that ruins the taste of the whole thing.  That first bite in the morning is hard but since all he has to do is swallow it down and fallow it by a completely pleasing taste it's not so bad....Hope this helps!  Good luck!

My son didn't want to take a pill and we use the Daytrana patch.  There is a little learning curve on how to put it on.  The side of the hip is best (doesn't come off) and I stick it in the freezer for about 20 mins prior to application.  It peels much easier.

We really like it

I have an appt. with his DR on MOnday and am going to ask about switching. Nothing works. Every morning is a battle with his crying and my cajoling and wheedling and begging and rewarding when he does get some down... Has anyone heard of Methlyn Chewable? It is a form of Ritalin. He chews his vitamins every morning, so that should work if it doesn't taste gross. Has anyone tried Ritalin LA? I heard yu can open it up and mix it with food and it will not make it taste disgusting. Straterra tastes disgusting. Nothing hides it.

I hope I don't sound pushy, but ask your dr. about the Daytrana patch.  It lasts all day, but if you forget to put it on until later in the morning, you can still take it off whenever you want.  (to get to sleep, we at first took it off right after school, but now that he is adjusted he can wear until 4 or 5!)

It takes about 1.5 - 2hours to kick in so I put it on at 6- 6:30 am.  We do homework before we leave and usually it's good enough to get through, but he is ready for school when he gets there.  It really affects his appetite (as most stimulant med may) but if he eats in the morning soon enough after I put it on, he can get a big breakfast.  He eats little at lunch, then about6-6:30 he starts eating again all the way until bedtime:)

There was the rebound issue at first in the afternoon. We were on 10 mg.  So then the dr. said to try 15 mg, but I felt he would have worse rebound, so I just cut it in half and kept him on 7.5 mg for about 2 month.  Then went to 10 mg for about another month, now we are at 15.  He is doing great!!!

Good luck!

with love:)
