9yr old always "singing" | ADHD Information

Share
Before starting ADHD meds, my child frequently made various noises.  The doctor told me it was letting off excess energy -- part of the hyperactivity -- and there also was some impulsivity contribuing to it (not checking the impulse to do these things).

Wow thanks for the info about the omega 3. We are off meds now so I am going to try some natural stuff even tho most doctors want to roll their eyes about it.

And no, he does not have musical ability and says he does not want to join the chorus. Shame, I ask him all the time too. I think the problem was, I did play music while he took his naps when he was a baby EVERY time. Thinking that would make him smarter, hmm mighta made him adhd from not getting enough quiet sleep. Ha.

Rebecca S. - I will take some of that patience if you have any extra! Mine runs out pretty regularly despite my trying to stock up on it.

We were told that kids with ADHD sign (or hum) to keep their brain stimulated. It's kind of like the way some kids with ADHD need to fidget while studying. It can actually help concentration.

My 9 yr old son also does this and it's to do with his adhd (stiulation). My son dosn't actually sing songs/words, it's more like noises/sounds to a beat..........oooh,aaah,didididi and yes, he's loud. My son will do this anywhere, while playing playstation and even on the toilet. His ounger sister gets very annoyed and often ask why does ........... talk to himself all the time?  Me and my husband need to be a bit more patient and tolerant but when he dosn't shut up, it's hard.

As for med's, were still trialing at present.

Good luck

Oh wow, your son is an older version of my son. He is almost 5 and sings and dances CONSTANTLY. It drives everyone around him crazy. His teacher has implimented a behavior plan at school because he is always singing Wiggles songs and Barney songs and Imagination Movers songs. He LOVES music, but the constant singing is so annoying. He just started Strattera and it has helped with his focus and attention, but has not helped at all with the singing. I tried fish oil but it did no good at all. The Strattera hasn't lessened the hyperactivity either. I have an appt, with the DR next month, so we will see.

Hello, my 9yr old adhd ODD sings alot. But they are noises strung together. Like OOOOH OOOOH OOOOH  realllllly loud!! He sits alone at the breakfast table and will do that the whole time. I have to put his brother at the kitchen table so that he can just eat and not be aggravated by his 9 yr old brother.

He says he doesnt do it at school so I imagine he saves it up all day.

Currently he is off all meds. Stimulants made him MEAN -hitting us!! And INTUNIV the same thing. His personality is to aggravate. I didn't know this disability existed to this extreme.

Does anyone else's child do this singing noise thing? Maybe I should patent some sort of adhd mouth zipper. Hey that would help with his constant talking back too!

Why is my son at your house?   My 8 year old son is constantly singing and making noise.  And yeah he irritates the crap outta my almost 11 year old son too.  Oh well.  I just tell him we all need a little more patience. Would it help if you actually had some music playing? Something pleasant that he could enjoy singing along to?
Is it possible that he has some musical abilities that could be channeled through lessons on an instrument or in voice?

My older son used to get annoyed by my daughter's singing, but she sings beautifully.

Also, maybe if conventional meds don't work for him, you might want to check out the "Alternative and Complimentary Meds" forum here on this message board. Many people find that high-EPA omega 3 supplements help with mood and ADHD symptoms. Not a dramatic instant cure, but helpful when taken long-term. (My family takes Omega 3 Mood by Country Life, ordered online). We, and others, also find an amino acid called phosphatidyl serine (PS) helpful. There are some long threads on both these supplements as well as others.

Best of luck!
In preschool, kindergarten and grade one my son was recommended to have his hearing tested because he was so loud and was constantly making humming/rhythmic noises.  Kids around him in school were driven to distraction!  I knew his hearing was fine but finally had the test done so I could prove it.  Now that he is on a good medication he doesn't do it much any more.  In fact, if he starts it tells me right away that I forgot to give him his meds that morning.Hi, they love to make these strange sounds.

Sometimes it helps to imitate them. It is only then that they realize what
they are doing and stop or make a more pleasant sound.

Sometimes if everyone starts to make this sound then we all end up
laughing. Laughter has been known to be the best medicine for a long
time.

Good luck, it is not always easy to see the lighter side of AD(H)D
We switched my son from Strattera to Focalin and it has decreased the singing bnehavior. He is able to control it at school, and doesn't do it as much at home. I notice that the singing and dancing emerge when he is anxious about something... a birthday party, a new place, a new person... It calms him down. Drives his sister and the rest of us crazy. The worst part is when we are in a setting where there is singing and dancing, like a party, he does not participate. My 11yr daughter sings all the time also. She has for years
it seems like. She has a beautiful voice. That still does
not make much of a difference to my 15yr old son. Sometimes
I do just have to tell her to take a brake or could she
sing in her head for a little while. My ds sang all the time at 5 years old. The meds stopped that. My son does that. I ignore it because he usually hums when he is happy. It makes my older son crazy.   He is doing it less as he gets older.  Now he is learning to play Bass and Guitar at school, and I am finding that he is VERY musical. Also, music really does calm the savage beast-he is a different kid when he is playing his guitar.
