It isn't easy that is for sure. And it seems like everyone else has normal children and would be shocked at my child's behavior sometimes. Maybe we should have a playdate! LOL
Anyway get this, I have stumble upon some info. I am still just finding out about it but you may want to research it too. I feel that ADHD is very related to Autism. That being said, some people are finding success with antiviral/antifungal treatments with their children.
It is called Defeat Autism Now. And they say you can recover from Autism because it is an immune system problem. And let me tell you my son does have some issues with his gut so i am kinda freaking out thinking i can fix him!!!!
Anyway, something to look up and a huge time sucker but wouldnt it be great if it could fix them in some way. Does your child have any indication of a gut problem? Like bad gas, sour breath, stomach aches, diarreah etc?
Mary
Mary, thanks for your reply. Very interesting what you said about the gut........yes my son does have gas and sour breath. Not really tummy aches though. Something for me to consider and research anyway so thanks again.
Good luck to both of us!
mploco, hi, I was just reading a post from melned to which you responded to and I note in your post your son has ADHD/ODD. My son has just turned 9 and dx ADHD and possible ODD but they wernt sure whether it was just from the ADHD. My son was on stimulant for about 7 months this year and due to tic's, he was taken off and we are into 3rd week of trying a new med but appears no difference. I find with my son, the hardest part is the ODD part. I have been seeing a clinic physc over past year and she's given strategies to put into place but they dont always work. In fact, it seems the more we do with our son and the older he gets, the worse he gets. I read your last post where you said "pick your battles" and yes, this is a big one with ODD kids.
Can I ask you a question? Does your sion have any issues at school regarding his ODD? In the past few months, my son has backchatted his school teacher. He basically smirks when she's trying to discipline him or he'll be rude and talk back and deny things. I have tried to talk calmly with my son about these issues with his teacher but he just denies it all and when I ask if she is lying he says yes! This is where I get stuck, how am I suppose to help my son if he dosnt even listen to me or denies everything?
As you can gather from my post, I also struggle to be around my son and both my hubby and daughter feel the same way. Me and hubby have had many arguments over the years out of frustration and stress and whilst its not good to do that in front of any child, its doubly worse in front of an odd child as it can make their behaviours worse.
Hope you dont mind me rambling on but it is hard to find others with an odd child. I wish you and your family the best and hopefully we can rise above our present position.

Hi..not mploco but thought I would chime in. Your son, sounds a bit like ours. Our DS has ADHD/Tourettes combo. He is unable to take stimulants because of the tourettes/tics. He also has defiant behaviors but not formally diagnosed ODD. You didn't mention tourettes in the mix..but..
I posted the link above to the USA - Tourettes Association. This article is meant for parents/educators and others who are in contact with children who have Tourettes or Tourettes/ADHD or Tourettes/Anxiety/Depression combos. This is the first article that actually decribed and identified all of my son's issues/difficulties. As much as I wish that he didn't have these things to deal with..we were able to change our mindset once we knew that he is unable to control much of what he does..and that most of his defiant behavior can be attributed to the tourettes.
Like you..none of the behavior plans (several psychologists) worked..and many seemed to make things worse. What has worked...staying calm (DH and I), don't argue with him (walk away), removed all consequences/punishments for things he cannot control (long list of things)..and having a well structured day. These things have eliminated approximately 80% of the behaviors...we are working on the rest.
One other thing that has worked...Tenex.. it is not a stimulant, but rather a high blood pressure med..but prescribed for kids with tourettes to help with tics and for those with ADHD to provide general calming and to elevate some of the stimulant side effects. On my son's personal hyper/defiant/impulse meter..this med turns him down to maybe 8.5 out of 10. Not huge..but as you know it could make all the difference in the world!
You sound like you have your hands full..we do too! Let's make it a great day!
